How many people would you need to save to give up your life?

    So here's a good hypothetical ? for ya'll.

    What's the minimum number of American lives would you need to save for you to forfeit your own. What's the magic number 1, 10, 100, 1000 or 'f it, let them all die cuz I will do anything to keep on living'.

    (For demographic purposes the people you will be saving will be representative of America. ie 55 percent women, 10 percent black, 15 percent Hispanic etc. etc. etc.)

    EDIT: YOU DON'T GET TO PICK WHO YOU SAVE. IT'S GOING TO BE RANDOM PEOPLE YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW

    I'm not sure I follow. Random people? My immediate family is more important to me than any larger group of people I can think of. As long as my wife and children are around and need me, I can't imagine willingly sacrificing my life for anyone but them.

    When I made the decision to enter the military, I did it as a young, single guy. It would be much harder for me to do something like that now that I have my family.

    that's why it's such a tough question. It's just a cross section of America that you don't get to choose. If you save 100 people, you'll prolly save a couple people in jail, maybe a homeless alcoholic. It's a true representation of America, the country we all love.

    There really should be a number each person can come up with. Can anyone say they wouldn't trade their life if they could save 100 million Americans. And for OT'ers in other countries go ahead and use your country for this hypothetical ?

    its so far fetched that i think its hard to answer honestly, cause right now i say no way would i save my life for 100 million Americans.

    Are we talking about definitely dieing to save people or just putting your life at risk to save them? For example, if we say a house is on fire and there is one random person in there, can I risk my life to hopefully save them and save myself. Or am I definitely going to die and that person definitely lives?

    nope you are definitely trading in your life. that's what makes this more interesting. of course I would trade risk my life to save others just like I would trade my life for my wife's. But these are random people you prolly never met.

    Okay, in that case, if it's not a child I would say(selfishly) it would have to be at least 10 people. Now, if it's a random young child that number goes down significantly. However, if it's a random person my age or older, I feel like I can continue to contribute to society as much if not more then those, so I would save myself, before a couple random people.

    Family and loved ones are completely different, as I would trade my own life for one of them in a second---(that comes with a big hypothetical though, as if it were one of my grandparents who are all ill and 75+ would be very upset if I chose me over them, and in that way I wouldn't).

    Good, yet very disturbing, question to think about though.
