  1. Out of thin air, i'd say $1500. If i have a little extra and find something really good, it may go $2345 top.

I have no clue on average ring prices, though i'm sure there's always something to fit your budget. So how much would/did you consider an engagement ring is worth?
  2. priceless. you can find nice ones in the 1k range and they go up to a shit ton. expensive doesnt mean nice. find something you think they she would like and would mean something to her and get that, the price doesnt matter.
  3. What is the standard now, 3 months salary?

I better get married before I become a pharmacist.
  4. about tree fitty.
  5. 3 months pay is the standard.
  6. Spend what you can afford. I have friends that have gone deep in debt to pay 15k+ for a ring. No need to go into debt when you're going to also have to find a way to pay for a wedding.
  7. the last time, and please God let it be the last time, was around 8500 including some band the ring sits in

  9. there's really no need to spend that much. it really depends on what your woman likes.

Luckily, my g/f really doesnt like much jewelry. The stuff she wears is simple.

She only wants a marquis cut with no side stones. I'm only going to spend about $1k and it will make her very happy.
  10. Spend whatever you can/want to spend. right now (my friend works in the diamond industry) a 1 karat, really good color/clarity/non-visible inclusions/etc. goes for near 10k, so you will have make some decisions on what you want to sacrifice. If you don't want to sacrifice size, losing a bunch of clarity and a little color will get you there.

Also, if you do some shopping and find a good diamond dealer who also designs their own jewelry you can get some really good deals getting the diamond and the ring together without the Name brand markup. That is what I did, I found a woman who has a little hole int he wall, but I could tell was really artsy. She designed some cool jewelry, was a diamond dealer, and I brought in some pictures of some ideas I had and she made the ring for me. Highly reccomend going tht route then just buying a premade ring.

This is what I ended up with:
  11. No matter what you get, she'll always want a little more...
    1
  12. I paid $1800 for her engagment ring. And than another $600 for her wedding band.

That aint always the case. Just the gold diggers imo.
  14. I spent $800 for a ring appraised at $6,500. It's good to know people.
  15. My buddy just dropped $25K in engagement/wedding rings. It was very important to his wife that she had a beautiful, flawless diamond, well, she got one. 1.75 carats, D color, that's all the details I know of (didn't bother asking the rest). It's a gorgeous ring, and he can afford it, so whatevs I guess.
  16. I paid $3500

I heard that the 3 months salary was invented by Debeers as a marketing ploy to get people to spend more money...

the whole diamond trade is a marketing ploy by debeers. Its such a joke really. Debeers has so many diamonds in its stockpile, if they released them all, diamonds would be worthless overnight. They got us by the balls.

Diamonds are also not rare enough to justify the price. There are several great docs on this issue out there. But good luck trying to get away with NOT buying one.
  19. I'm almost positive I would never be engaged to a chick that cared how big/clear/expensive her engagement ring is. a rock or a sick ass 10k honeymoon . . . tough choice.
  20. 50k min......

20k if i love him MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD (than diamonds) and decide to get over it....unlikely.....

if someone gave me a 5k ring...id look at it....look at them...look back at the ring....ask where the hell the diamond is....and give it back....

whats better, a little chunk of money on your finger, or the memories of a sick ass long honeymoon.

say I have 20k for both. would you rather have a big clear thing on your finger, and a night at my grandparents house, or a gold band and a monthlong sexy party in fiji with everything taken care of?
  27. Norm MacDonald had a joke on Weekend Update along the lines of "The Diamond Institute of America recommends you spend 3 months salary on an engagement ring. In similar news, the National Association of Crack Dealers recommends you spend 100% of your salary on crack."

The 3-month salary thing is bullshit, and honestly, if your girl or anyone pressures you along those lines, you need to seriously consider their judgment and how comfortable you are with this level of materialism.

That said, you can't be obviously cheap either. It's tough to find a middle ground.

Unless your heart is really set on surprising her out of the blue, you should go out shopping together and talk a lot about how much you wish to spend. That way, there are no surprises, and expectations are clearly defined.

11 years ago, I spent $4500 on the engagement ring, and I think we spent about $1000 combined on the two wedding rings.

  28. Nothing personal, but you do know this makes you a fantastically materialistic bitch, right?

As long as you're OK with it, and you can find some giant sap who is also OK with it, then I wish you well. But that's really awful.

  29. You always here women say, "In a couple of years, we are gonna upgrade." Well I nipped that in the bud. I took my wife to the place and let her do her thing. I spent 8k on it and ill never have to spend anymore. Plus I got hooked up. So shop around.
  30. do people wear their engagement rings after they are married???? why the fuck would u upgrade? thats like upgrading my fucking retainer after my braces have been off for years.
