Long story but hopefully worth the read:
I have been training for Ironman Wisconsin on Sept. 11. Awhile back Ford (sponsor of Ironman) posted an Ironman essay contest for each of their triathlons.
On Monday My essay won the IM Wisconsin award. The winning prize was $2500 cash plus entry into any Ford Ironman Triathlon next year except for Kona (World Championships on TV). I also win VIP passes and swag and an interview in an article. This is like super huge run good in life status.
Then it takes a turn for the better.
I was on the phone with the Ironman rep last night talking about Wisconsin and just shooting the shyt about my essay on the school that I teach PE at. 20 minutes after we end the phone call, he calls back and offers me....
An entry into THIS years Ironman World Championship. The exec. producer of NBC apparently read my essay and told Ford reps that he wanted me for this years World Championship as an inspirational athlete. So...of course I accept. I was told I have to forego and pass on Ironman Wisconsin and make my 140.6 mile debut in Hawaii. I wil be featured in the main Ironman broadcast that NBC puts on every year. This, to me, is the coolest thing to happen in life. I fly out Oct. 2, race Oct. 8 and return on the 10th. The national broadcast premiere of the race and myself will be sometime in December.
Like astronmical odds that the producer saw this and begged to pick me up from Ford. I was on the phone with him today and he said that all the other features were people who signed up and won through the Ironman lottery back in November. I am picked up and switch races 5 weeks until race time.
Life run good as a friend of mine said on facebook. -

congrats dude, seriously the most legit brag i think i have ever read in OT

wow, so cool for you.

Congrats. Are you able to post the essay?

"An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon (26.2 miles 42.195 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race, where the Ironman race starts at 7 AM, the mandatory swim cut off for the 2.4 mile swim is 2 hours 20 minutes, the bike cut off time is 5:30 PM, and all finishers must complete their marathon by midnight."
Just being in good enough shape to compete in an event like that is a pretty sweet accomplishment. To write an inspirational essay and get handpicked to compete in the World Championship in Hawaii is pretty damn sick and must feel great. Congrats man. Enjoy every minute of it.
as Glo4m mentioned, looking forward to reading the essay -
Worthy brag post! Saying you're competing in an Iron Man alone is brag worthy imo but the rest is unreal run good. Congrats man!
I watch the event every year while drinking beer and smoking cigarettes thinking these guys are nuts. -
congrats!

congrats man. Be careful during the swim portion though, October is shark season in Hawaii.

congratulations, man - that's too cool. Not to fuck with your head or anything, but how much pressure does this put on you, now? did you already feel pretty good about cracking the time limit?
