  1. BETHESDA, Md. -- A quick-thinking 911 dispatcher and a defibrillator at a high school are credited with helping save a man who collapsed during a basketball game.

A 50-year-old man collapsed and went into cardiac arrest while playing a pick up game of basketball with about a dozen other people at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Sunday.

As others performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, Chris XXXXX((THAT'S ME)) called 911.

Dispatcher Bill Macuch asked whether anyone there knew how to use the school's public access defibrillator.

Assured that someone there knew how to use the debrillator, Macuch stays on the phone giving XXXXX directions.

After one shock was delivered by the bystanders, first responders and paramedics from Chevy Chase, Bethesda and the Bethesda Chevy-Chase Rescue Squad arrived and continued CPR.

The patient was taken to Suburban Hospital in critical condition.

Montgomery County has more than 1,000 public automatic external defibrillators, the most of any jurisdiction in the region and Maryland. They are in all health clubs, recreation centers and high school gymnasiums.
