    Nope - this will be my first time. I've been to the bahamas before, and this is a good bit more expensive, but I wanted to treat myself a little bit. I actually got the idea after reading an article about the saltwater flats in Cuba, but I obv couldn't do that. I have 4 dream destinations for fly fishing and this will be my first one to cross off the list - so we'll see how it goes.

    I'm going to spend a day visiting some Mayan ruins, but I've heard some nasty shit about the mainland, so I'm intrigued what that'll actually be like.

    Went to Belize a few years ago on my honeymoon. You're going to have a blast...get your own snorkel and goggles if you don't have them already, so you don't have to rent shitty ones.

    mozzer - I hadn't planned on going snorkeling, but I have a friend from school that says I'm nuts if I go and don't scuba or snorkel. If I only spend a half day snorkeling - I assume I would need to get a guide who would have equipment, would it really be worth renting?

    Absolutely. The snorkeling is absolutely amazing. SCUBA is great too, they can certify you same day...but if you haven't done either, you'll have a lot of fun snorkeling. You can grab a tour from the mainland, and for a flat rate they take you too a caye, give you lunch and equipment. You simply cannot go to Belize without snorkeling and/or SCUBA. Trust me.

    totally totally worth snorkeling in Belize. Just wear a tshirt or you'll burn the shit out of your back/neck.

    As for packing, I always forget to bring a dirty laundry bag/pillow case

    Edit: oh, and bring some soothing cream (aloe?) for after you get a sunburn, which you probably will get. And bring a hat or two in case you lose one.

    I'll be in the cayes for the whole trip with the exception of traveling in/out and a day to see the mayan ruins @ Altun Ha. I think you can do a half day of guided fly fishing/half day of snorkeling for only like $250 - so I guess I'll do that. (I'm tempted to stop at Best Buy and get an underwater camera now)

    user - THANK YOU - I wouldn't have even thought about a pillow case for the hotel.

    In Belize, it's not so much a "guide" as someone to take you to a good part of the reef in their boat. You can't just swim out to the reef.

    cdmalgee--think about going out in a sailboat. I did both while I was there (motor and sail), and preferred the sailboat, but may be only available for full days.

    BUG SPRAY!!! The best you can find. You have no idea how mean those little fuckers can get. You'll be sippin' a beer, watching the sun set, getting your lady wet and than 3 hours later sexy time is over cause you can't stop scratching...then again, the scratching may come because of sexy time so bring penacillan, too.

    Cubs hat if you plan to visit the mainland outside of any touristy spots, I swear to this day the hat saved my life because I'm pretty sure any tv they have consists of only WGN. I got separated from family and ended up in some bad parts, which seemed like most of Belize mainland, but the locals were so excited to see my Cubs hat and hear I was from Chicago that they ended up treating me with respect. There's a much longer story, but not typing it from my phone.

    Mayan Ruins are cool, I can't remember the specific spot we went to that was my favorite, I think it was the Yucatan sinkhole.

    Went there as one of the destinations on a cruise. Z-Fresh is right about the bugs. If you go into the jungle (ruins) the mosquitoes are nuts. As far as the snorkeling goes you can just go to a touristy spot and they have little stands that sell different tourist packages. You can get one that takes you to a little island and provides snorkeling equipment and food. That's what we did anyways. Played volleyball with some people and saw a monkey. Good times.

    I would go for the brief scuba lesson and do a half day of that.... but yeah, snorkeling at a minimum.
