  1. So I just graduated and I'm going to get a car. My budget is $15k-$20k, but I wouldn't mind going over if I'm getting a good value. I'm looking for a standard 4-door, preferably 6-cyl. I'd prefer a used car, but I obviously want one in good condition.

The only problem is that I'm an idiot when it comes to cars; I know absolutely nothing. What should I be looking for? What should I be staying away from? How many miles should I want on a used car? $5 on stars to the person who gives me the best advice. Thanks!
  2. ez game.

2 or 3 year old Accord. Holds value better than any other car ive seen.

    dont want $5

  5. If you really don't know what you want, I would suggest spending less. That way it will be easier down the road to get something when you have some idea what you really want.

Reason: you live in ND, get a pickup truck
  6. Used Subaru WRX. All Wheel Drive, Power, Fast. Perfect for ND.
  7. Seeing that you live in North Dakota, and you're subject to wintry weather for at least 4-5 months out of the year, maybe more (never been to ND), I would get something where you'll be able to get around in the snow. The following I will link to at the end looks really sharp, and its in your hometown. Granted, its an SUV, but it fits right into your said budget. Don't know whether you like automatic or manual transmission, as it doesn't say on here, but its quite low mileage for an '07 (less than 8k miles a year average on it so far, since '07's usually were released in 2006), and Subaru's are fairly reliable (made in Japan so you know they're built to last, like Toyota Camry's, Honda Accord's, etc).

Or you can spend $9k on a 2006 Pontiac G6 with most if not all of what you seek in a car. That way you still have a few thousand left over to invest in something else, or save.

I may live in ND but I'm as far away from a truck guy as you can be. And the money isn't a concern.

fair enough, i suppose anything you buy locally will probably be equipped somewhat to deal with your winters.

  15. Get an older model Infinity G-series, make sure it has 4WD. I drive a really old one, 2003, but it has almost 300 HP, is good on gas, looks like a champ, only cost $11K. You can definitely get a nice used Infinity for that, and they are seriously nice cars and have really nice performance.

  16. Should be able to find one basically brand new.
  17. get yourself an 08' 09' lexus es-treefiddy!!!

    cant go wrong.....
  18. check out consumerreports.org and look at reliability ratings before you buy. The cost of a car is nothing compared to the cost of repairs. Many brands fail miserably in this department.

My suggestion, given that you live in ND and should be looking for something with AWD is a G35-x or G37-x. U can get a used one with <100k miles for below your budget. I'd recommend one that is atleast 5 years old so that you aren't absorbing the brunt of the depreciation.

  19. Inside Line ranked the best 10 used cars for under 20k (exactly what you're looking for) and the list came out like this:

    2001-'03 BMW M3 Coupe
    2004-'05 Subaru Impreza WRX STi
    2001-'03 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
    2003-'04 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
    2004-'06 Honda S2000
    2002-'03 Porsche Boxster S
2005-'06 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII and IX
    2002-'03 Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG
    2005-'07 Nissan 350Z
    2003-'05 Infiniti G35 Coupe

Now, obviously it depends exactly what you're looking for and what your personal preferences are, but something specific to stay away from is anything that has longterm/recurring damage, as that would get expensive to fix. Be suspicious if the mileage is rolled back, or if the seller won't let you run a car history report.

  25. What kind of cars are you interested in? Small gas saver type, Fast, sporty, Luxury? I think you need to narrow it down a little

I guess not really old, just "older". For the price though, I say screw the newer lower brand cars and go with a higher end brand car that is 2 or 3 years older (BMW, Mercedes, etc.). The cars RUBINH listed will keep their value nicely, and like Nate said if you go older the car is already depreciated. After once buying a new Pontiac Sunfire (I know, I know, pretty much the shittiest cars out there), I would find it hard to convince myself to buy any car newer than 4 years old except a Challenger, and only because I wish I could marry a Challenger (so beautiful).

I want something that won't break down, don't care about sporty/luxury etc. Accords have been what I'm looking at right now, but I'm obviously open to hearing what everyone has to say.

And the $5 went to SavageChrist. I appreciate everyone's help though.
