  1. This has been an amazing year. Im sitting hear watching Glavine win his 300th, watched Bonds hit 755. So many other records broken this year. I love baseball.

PS: Glavine's wife was wearing white capris lol
  2. whore
  3. I personally can't stand the big deal MLB makes out of rounding off numbers to increase sales and TV ratings, getting 500 HRs, 300 wins, 3000 hits is the same thing as 296 wins or 498 HRs yet they make it seems like they are a better player when the reach one of those rounded off numbers.

Breaking a record is another story and should be made a big deal but the hype around getting to a rounded off number that 20 guys have already done doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.
  4. Did he really just say less is the same thing as more?
  5. actually there is a long history of math taht says 296 is not the same as 300

baseball has been making a big deal out of the milestones long before they had a big tv deal
  6. Baseball is the only sport where the numbers and statistics matter. I mean for christ sakes there are statistics on every single thing that you could think of in baseball. Ever hear of sabremetrics? Its part of the game and always has been. Baseball is played as a team game but in reality there is alot of individuality in the game. Hitter v pitcher, runner v pitcher, fielder v runner, etc etc

The reason the numbers are rounded off are for the avg baseball fan. It helps the public classify certain players vs the history of baseball. If you are a die hard fan then the number become less relevant.

  7. that's because the game itself is so damn boring compared to football/basketball.
  8. do all these people who keep saying no one is ever going to get 300 wins again not know who CC Sabathia is?
  9. dan alot of ppl say that, but if you asked them what sport do you wanna see live then they will all say baseball. Who doesnt love going to the ballpark on a sunday afternoon to watch a game?

There are less football games so each one means more, which causes mass excitement. Basketball is just a different beast its indoors and your in and out in 2 hrs for a game and then you can go otu afterwards and still have a night.

  10. They are not just rounded off numbers. They are milestones that are used to measure accomplishment.
  11. If you asked me, I'd say football. I'm not trying to knock baseball, I've just started getting into it recently and I think it's cool. I like all the little stuff like all these records. I'm just saying, that stuff has to be a big part of the game because we like action, and baseball is a slower paced sport than the others.
  12. 15 wins a year for the next 13 years puts him around 300 at 40 yrs old. Tough to pencil a guy in for that many the way the game is played now.
  13. I dont see Sabathia pitching another 14ish years let alone throwing another 14 years on the pace he is on now, sure he is a great pitcher but to even throw sabathia's name into pitchers who will win 300 is a little crazy.
  14. I'm not saying it's a given, but he definitely has a better shot than anyone else in the majors right now, unless Mussina somehow has enough left in the tank to get 51 more wins or Randy Johnson makes a ridiculous comeback at 43 years old. To say it's never going to happen again is ridiculous.

He's going to get to 100 wins or very close this year and he's 27 years old. He's had double digit wins every year of his career. And if he stays in Cleveland, he's going to get a TON of run support for the next several years, because their lineup is stacked.
  15. Is there anyone else in the majors right now with a better chance? Also, is there a reason why you don't think he'll play for another 14 years? There are tons of 40+ pitchers still going today.

I'm honestly asking, btw, because I really don't know. I just started following baseball, so maybe I'm showing all of my ignorance off in this thread.
  16. you can pencil him in when he reaches 250 and he is only 37.
  17. Out of the pitchers currently playing, yeah he has the best chance, but 200 more wins in his career is just so many and you cant count on a pitcher's arm making it to 40-41 years old, there are really only a handful of them. It is such an incredible feat, I really hope he does I love the way the guy throws.
  18. I think another guy who has about the same chance as him would be Tim Hudson. The guy has a sick win percentage, and he is on the Braves. Granted Mazzone is gone, but I think it is a good situation and he has an outside shot.
  19. CC Sabathia? lolololol
     1
  20. dan--all it takes is one arm injury and he has NO shot whatsoever.

300 wins might be the hardest plateau to predict.
  21. Never say never. If Liriano comes back strong, he could have a chance, as could the kid from Seattle. You just never know. It's ignorant to say it will never happen again.
    1
  22. ^^^that's basically all I'm saying. say it's harder than it once was, but don't say it's never gonna happen again.
  23. I don't think you were responding to me, mantis, but I agree.

I was simply saying it's the hardest milestone to predict IMO.

If we're going to throw names out there, we might as well mention Tim Lincecum, right?
  24. WOW!!! you really are not that big of a baseball fan as you think... do you honestly think that CC is the only pitcher right now that has a chance...

Johan Santana right now is the most likely to reach it before anyone again... he is sick he throws consistent 94-96ish and the sickest changeup in baseball... he does not rely on his fastball which makes him GREAT. Santana will be able to dominate for another ten years and once he reaches his mid 30's then analysts can take a look at him and see if he has a shot... but in my opinion he is the only viable option... no one else is really as dominant as Johan in the game right now.

And for you saying that CC is the only one and going to be next!!!! LMAO!!!! CC sabathia is a BUM. He sucks... he relys on his 96-100MPH fastball and nothing else, that is his out pitch. He might be at 100 wins at 27 but what you dont understand is that baseball is the most grueling season that there is, 162 games over 9 months with only one day off a week.... it is insane. Ive played at the highest levels and my arm couldnt take it, ive had to have rotator cuff surgery and thats why I no longer play. By the time CC is 35 he will be lucky if he is throwing 92 and at 200 wins. You just can not last throwing that hard for that long. Look at glavine... he tops out at like 90 right now he has insane control and sick junk. CC is a fat bum that just sits back and fires. I would not be surprised at all if in 7-10 years you dont see CC in the bullpen maybe sooner closing games like smoltz. He simply does not have the physique or the style to last that long.

One more thing. Take a look at the guys that have just reached 300... look at Clemens, he has a work out for college baseball and high school teams to use. Its called the Roger Clemens work out, its supposed to be for pitchers but could be used for all positions... its mostly conditioning. It is insane. You warm up with a 3 mile jog pretty much. You have to be in the greatest shape of your life at age 40-45 to hit 300 wins because pitchers simply do not get enough decisions these days. Instead of 35-40 appearences per season, starters are only seeing 25-30 because of 5 man rotations, managers leaning more towards the DL rather than just a day off. It just wont be done anytime soon. The only one I see is Mussina but I think hes alread 37 or 38 and he would have to pitch pretty well into his 40's to come close, because hes still 54 away.

    Just my 2 cents
  25. baring incredible rubber arm(ie Nolan Ryan) power pitchers just dont have the shelf life of someone who relies on changeups and spoting fastballs.

Felix from seattle wont stand a chance becaus hes young and he already spent a stint on the DL, and while lincecum has great mechanics he just throws too hard for too long to even be talked about. But he is very young so he ahs that going for him.
  26. I never said I was a big baseball fan. I already admitted that in this thread. This is the first season I've ever paid any attention to baseball before October. Your post and others like it are helping me learn. I didn't even know what a squeeze play was a couple weeks ago, lol.
  27. i love baseball too...
