I understand that there will almost positively never be a draft again in the United States, but if there was, (or if you had to fulfill a military obligation), and you got the option of picking the job, what job in the military would you pick? officer/enlisted? pilot/special forces/ regular infantry or just some non-combat job. also what branch of the military would you pick?
this question can also apply for Canadians and members of the UK, but not france for obvious reasons.
i would pick either the marines or the army, and either a pilot or special forces.
compensation for wasting your valuable time answering my question

^^ not related but couldnt resist
once again, thanks to all who have served/are serving/ will serve. -
I'd go for an Officer in the Air Force. I was actually pretty damn close to doing this in real life but then landed a pretty good job.
-
Not sure if its a curse or a blessing, but im blind in my right eye...No service for me.

Pick a job, not so much. Sign up for one of the programs and hope you are qualified/get selected/make it through training. You just dont say...hmm..i want to be Special Forces and bam, you are in the jungle deep behind enemy lines raping goats and killing babies. -
apparently you missed the part where this was a hypothetical question, obviously IF there was a draft, they would stick your ass where they needed you. the key word of this entire thread is "IF" sir. good day

id pilot a uav from an office in tampa...it would be like playin a video game all day

IF there was a draft, they would still match the most qualified person with the job they are capable of doing. They would just increase the numbers in each field. But anyway....

This might be the best job ever. Even if you got put on one of the mobile detachments that do deploy, still a great job. -
probably a field medic of some kind.
-
Maybe you should show some of that respect you were talking about to someone who is actually servining instead of this bullshit

i believe Wanta was pointing out how worthless the hypothetical part of your question was -
nothing i said was disrespectful, i made the question pretty detailed to emphasize how unlikely this situation really is. on the military channel they did a online survey on which jobs people who arent currently in the military would prefer to have if for some reason they had to/wanted to enlist. so i tried to simplify the complexity of the question. im going to college with the sole intention of becoming an officer in the military, but if i disrespected wanta in any way, i apologize.

Sniper. Be kinda cool to pick the enemy off one clean head-shot at a time while the rest shit their pants and look around desperately trying to figure out where DEATH is coming from.
-
sniper plz
-
i'd probably be told to just shut up and color if i tried to volunteer before having my name drawn and then if they let me volunteer i'd prolly just end up doing what i currently do or some derivative
sigh -

Some more on this...I was watchin some movie yesterday thinking about how awesome it would be and all that, but there is some level of guilt involved. Atleast when you are in combat you know the enemy is actively trying to kill you. A lot of times I'm sure (well not sure) snipers have to ace someone they are told is the enemy, but they can't really be sure they are in any present danger. My friend Mikey is( or was not sure) a sniper in Iraq. He came back and one night me and few other close friends were all drinking/smoking with him and out of nowhere he got all dramatic and started balling his eyes out, talking about some crazy story where he had to shoot some guy who couldn't have been older than 19 or 20. He didn't get into number or details, but he said he had nightmares and feelings of guilt about it all the time. Shit was pretty intense none of us saw it coming. -
Sniper for me too... Wanted to do that since i was tiny. Still do. although im kinda glad i cant what with all the wars we keep havin..

Edited By: wantagolf Aug 9th, 2010 at 12:49 AMJust remember...on a ship they have these, every ship and they are like 5 foot in height, so every "knee Knocker" you come too, you would have to duck and step over. hahaha.Originally Posted by orgnalsooners

One of the kids on the ship was drunk...kinda running through his work area and hit his head on the top of the Knee Knocker as he was kinds jumping through it. he basicly scapled himself in the front lobe of his head. Fucked dude up bad.
