...and you got to choose any two current nfl players, one on offense and one on defense, to try and win next season, who would they be? I would say:
Offense: Peyton Manning
Defense: Ed Reed
Keep in mind, you are trying to win right away. I know these guys are not young, but they are at the peak of their careers and the top of their respective positions, which is why I picked them. -
A P
Ray Lewis -
Offense: Tom Brady
Defense: it won't matter -
So this isn't for the long term it's to give you the best chance to win in 2009?
I don't think there's any doubt
Off: Manning
Def: Reed
You nailed it... -
and then i will run all over your d
-
I thought about this and I had a hard time picking Ed Reed over a linebacker like Ray Lewis or a defensive end. However, Reed is so good at his position and he creates so many turnovers and defensive scores that I went with him. I think on offense, though, you have to go with a quarterback. The QB is more important to a football team than any other player, IMO. I'd say you have to go with Manning or Brady. Since Brady may have a few question marks for next year and Manning just had an MVP season, I chose Manning.

albert haynesworth
steve hutchinson -
Albert Haynesworth
Andre Smith -
Peyton Manning
Mario Williams -
You can win with marginal secondary play
I've yet to see a team win a super bowl this decade without either great LB or great D line play.
The Colts are the closest team to do it this decade but even they had those great speed rushing ends and at least solid LB play.
Ed Reed's a special player and a top 3 safety of all time but not the guy you start a team with. -
i would go Oline over QB. if theres is no one to block for the QB even the greatest of all time will be ineffective.
-
Tom Brady, Patrick Willis
Edit: After thought I would really think about taking Jake Long...
Both are very young. Willis is already a beast in the middle and only getting better. Long will be a pro bowler within 2 years and will be a staple at LT for years to come -
One thing for you guys to consider, plenty of average RB's look like superstars behind the right O-Line, plenty of talented QB's look quite average behind the wrong O-Line.
-
OP said he wants to win next season so youth doesn't really matter here
Offense has to be Peyton Manning
Defense could be a lot of people. I'd personally take Haynesworth since dominant D-Line is the where they least amount of depth is on defense in the NFL but there are a lot of guys that you couldn't go wrong with. -
But he said to win "this year". If this was the last season of the NFL, you wouldn't pick an offensive lineman. You draft those guys to build around for your future. If the league folded next year and everyone knew it was going to, you'd want Peyton Manning or Brady on offense much more than you would Steve Hutchinson
IMO -
I'm not saying that if you take a quarterback like Manning that you have to have a sh*tty offensive line. I would just take Manning over an offensive linemen.

Reed may be an iffy pick. I agree that a linebacker for the center of your defense or a defensive linemen for pass rush/run stopping may more valuable. I am just on an Ed Reed high right now because of how he has played this year, including their playoff game. If he can continue to cause turnovers and score points on D then I dont think he is a bad pick.
And just because you choose a safety doesn't mean you can't have a good D-line and/or linebackers too. -
Going to new teams, I wouldn't be as high on Manning/Brady.
Without knowing what holes the potential team has, it's basically impossible to pick.
But I'll go with dynamic players on each side of the ball:
AP
Haloti Ngata
A running back and a great nose tackle can change everything on their respective side of the ball. -
Youth does indeed matter gentlemen, the rate of regression in the NFL isn't kind to the older statesmen of the league, sure it isn't likely that next year Manning regresses into a league average QB, but that day will come my friends I assure you, and it will quite certainly be "unexpected".
-
If I was starting a franchise I would not be worried about next year so I would select
Andre Smith
Michael Oher
Screw defense. WE CAN BUILD ON THIS! -
QB- matt ryan
LB- Patrick Willis.
Who knows how long Brady Manning have left in the tank. I would say 5 years each is a good estimate. Matt Ryan looks like the real deal. Hes got a full career ahead of him. For those east coasters who dont get to watch many horrible 9ers games Patrick Willis is the next Derrick Brooks at LB. Better to build your defense around a LB than a safety. -
I'm in love with Oher as a mid-first rounder (14-22), but I'm kind of wondering if his story compelled me to be a little too optimistic about him.
He has the tools, but lacks experiance to the point where his lottery pick talent isn't enough for "experts" to project him as an immediate differance maker in the league. -
I know they aren't going to play forever, but right now I would much, much rather have Peyton Manning or Tom Brady than Matt Ryan.

My defensive picks are much closer. Ray Lewis, Mario Williams, DeMarcus Ware and Dwight Freeney are right up there with Ed Reed on D. -
Combination of leadership and talent for each player is the most important thing.
If I pick Albert Haynesworth, he's stopping the run and getting to the passer, but if I don't have the other pieces around him he's only one part of the defense.
If I pick someone like Ray Lewis, I'm taking a proven leader that will demand the most out of the players around him and captain his side of the ball. This is more important to me than any stat, if I'm taking one player to build around.
Same reason I'd choose Manning...his work ethic and leadership rub off on everyone else, and you want someone like that (along with his talent) leading that side of the ball. -
I just read Blindside so Im partial, and even though he just cost us the Sugar bowl I love big Andre as a bama fan.
