    I'm not very familiar with copyright laws and patents, but say I found a cure for cancer, and obtained a patent for it, and kept it to myself, would everyone who wanted it be SOL?

    patents wouldn't matter given how many people would want to take you hostage for the cure

    Not true. Someone else could independently come up with the same cure but would be prevented from distributing it due to the patent claim.

    intellectual property is one of the reasons i'm glad i couldn't hack it as a lawyer.

    sure there shouldn't be laws restricting some 2nd place johnny come lately from monetizing his talents, but my labor is literally my life. there needs to be some protection to said labor. especially, when it deals in tricky shit like art.
