  1. So my wife was talking to a family friend who has 2 kids and they were saying that they along with another 2 kids had a bake sale today. The plan was for the kids to make cookies and cupcakes to sell around the block and donate the money to charity. While I agree with the whole giving and teaching kids to give I also think that raising kids to understand that working and making something for themselves is important. Among the 4 kids they made about $12 each and I was saying take $5 for the kids and give it to them for something while donating the rest. My wife was saying it's more important to donate it all so they understand the concept of giving. What are your thoughts?

  4. If the original idea was to raise $$$ for a charity, then donate all the proceeds. Otherwise, the $$$ was earned under a false pretense, as people thought they were contributing to a charity rather than the kids wallets.

And do not sweat it. The kids will have realized that, if they do this again, they can do it to raise $$$ for themselves. Kids learn about $$$ verrrry quickly.
  5. ^^^. can't give em money after the fact.

next time tell them they can keep all profits (after deducting cookie expense). then take half and call it taxes. that'll learn em right quick

you could even give the option of giving to charity to lower their tax bill lol
  6. Agree with Milo on this one - the kids weren't expecting $ out of it - just the good feeling that comes with helping others - give them a pat on the back or take them to do something fun for their hard work, but don't take $ out of why they earned - taking $ for themselves after telling ppl they were doing this for charity sends the wrong message to the kids imo

  7. $12 fucking dollars?

Should have just dropped them off at home depot with the mexicans and taught them a better lesson.
  8. Not only would it be raising money under false pretense, you also want the kids to do what they say the will. No renigging.
  9. that's racist!

  11. race baiters.
  12. haha, next time i buy a few boxes of girl scout cookies i'll ask the lil tots what their take is.
  13. This could be the dumbest topic ever
  14. Tell them if they want to do this for charity, then you and your wife (mom and dad) will help them pay for the ingredients, etc., because it is a good thing that they are doing. There is reward in doing charitable acts that cannot be measured in dollars (this is your wife's lesson).

But if (when) they want to do it for themselves, then they will have to pay for the ingredients themselves. This will provide them with a better sense of how economics work (which is what your lesson seems to be).

  15. sounds like you are teaching them how social security "works." we'll collect money for your retirement...and then ship it to your neighbor.
  16. i bought one of those cup cakes and if you give your kids a 5 spot i want a refund. ship via fulltilt

very thoughtful of them - you should probably reward them for their hard work
  20. I agree with most of the others that you can't change it now or you would have been committing fraud on your customers.

Seems to me that the concept of providing for oneself should be learned before the concept of providing for others.

    This.

Teaching them that stealing from charity is okay doesn't seem like a good idea. I see where you are coming from wanting to teach them about earning money for working, maybe next time they decide to do this you could set up a fun little "business", hire the kids for a real houly wage to prepare and serve food to some homeless people. This would even work with the bake sale idea.

  24. You've taught your children a vaulable lesson about how to skim money off of charitable donations. They are future congressmen now, congrats!
  25. Take them to DQ as a reward for their efforts..................sheesh.

  28. You are merely teaching your children the lesson of charitable donation tax refunds.
