  1. Following in Powda's foot steps, I have an interview tomorrow with an engineering company here in Boulder. The position is for a technical internal sales rep position, a 4 year engineering year was required but it is still sales. Among other things, I would essentially be working presale with customers basically giving them an interview of their needs and specifications so we can fit them with the proper products.

My agenda has me interviewing in front of a panel of six members of the company, have a little break and then an hour for an In-basket exercise and a tech test. I have done a lot of research on the company, the products and brushed up on my thermo dynamics (thermo based products/company) and even practiced selling random things to myself in the mirror, but I am still a little uneasy about what could be included in a In-basket exercise and tech test. Anyone had a "Technical sales" interview or been apart of these tech tests? Any advice would be much appreciated.

  2. Don't wear a tshirt that has a cuss word on it, the play him off cat is acceptable tho.

Gl! You'll crush it. Presales is sweet imo. Lots of travel. No cold calling. You get a peice of the action. Such WIN.
  3. No other advice for you than to be confident. I've met a lot of people from this site, and you are one who I think would be great in this type of position.

    Good luck tomorrow.

  4. I used to work/intern at a company that made noise cancellation software, and the guys who did what you are interviewing for always seemed to be in the best moods, and like SkiSteve stated, they got to travel ALL the time.

  5. glgl, be confident, works with jobs and women

  6. Thanks BGX, definitely helps with the confidence. I should be able to kill it, Im very confident in my abilities to learn and adapt to the field so I'll just go in with that mentality and should be fine. I also just found out one the guys Im interviewing with went to the same school and got the same degree as me and another worked his way through school and a year after school bartending at the same restaurant Im bartending at now, so I feel that can only work in my advantage.

  7. After 13 months of being graduated with an engineering degree and tending bar I finally got a job. Sure its an unnecessary update since about 4 of you care, but I crushed the interview had them laughing/loving every minute of talking to me and got my first real person job offer. I start July 7th which means I will be at the OT party for my last hurrah, apparently Im in the real world now. GL me

  8. so fucking awesome dude. congrats! quick question: what is an in basket exercise?
  9. An in basket exercise is where they give you a list of tasks in an imaginary scenario and you have to prioritize and explain what you would take care of first and why.

  10. woah, hold on a minute here -- at any point did they spin you around while you were in this basket? I can't be sure, maybe TheFirm can comment, but you may have a case here depending on the manner in which they demanded that you handle their "tasks".

no seriously though, congrats! I did tech sales for a Fortune 500 network routing vendor and the salary and bonuses were top top for the easiest work of my career.

Reason: put the fucking lotion in the basket!

  11. yeah Im really excited, the company is in the top 100 of Fortune's 500 and my first impressions of the company and the people are extremely positive, this should be a good place to get my foot in the door and really start to begin my career. Plus they have tuition assistance and they were 100% behind my plan to work with them for 2-3 years and then paying for me to go back to school and get my MBA.

That's awesome! Sounds like a great opportunity, as well. It seems as if grads don't get hired right out of school and have to "struggle", as it were- that they tend to appreciate it all the more once a job is finally landed. Nice job...literally.
