1. for anyone interested in what's going down over there, some links.

In his sermon on Friday, Ayatollah Khamenei said opposition leaders who failed to halt the protests “would be responsible for bloodshed and chaos.” The tough words seemed to dash hopes for a peaceful solution to what defeated candidates and protesters call a fraudulent election last week, plunging Iran into its gravest crisis since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Tweet's:

11.33 am. Mousavi is speaking.

11.32 am. In response to the violence of the security forces, people are now beginning to shout “Death to Khamenei”

11.28 am. Some reports of Mousavi on the streets.

11.27 am. Shiraz erupting?
REPORT FROM SHIRAZ: Intense conflict in Alam Square.

11.17 am. I have to say I found the boiling water from helicopters hard to believe. And yet more tweets repeat it:

Two reports coming from Tehran about helicopters pouring boiling water on protesters.

reports of some Iranians protesting with Qurans in their hand.

even at metro station at azadi ppl r beaten up!!!

2. follow the tweets and pics on andrew sullivans blog

An eyewitness in Enghelab square reports around 20,000 riot police, made up of Basiji militiamen and soldiers, and armed with rifles, tear gas and water cannons. The eyewitness saw dozens of people beaten by riot police in an attempt to frighten them into evacuating the square, with one young man being beaten to the ground by four policemen. The protesters were not wearing the green insignia that signifies support for Mousavi, and were not making victory signs or chanting. The eyewitness reports riot police attacking people on passing motorbikes and, on occasion, innocent passersby who have no way of escaping the heavy police presence. Nonetheless, there are thousands of Mousavi supporters, marching peacefully near the square, where rthey have been subjected to these brutal reprisals from the police. Across Tehran, there is widespread fear and panic, with many desperate to know what is going on in Enghelab square, but unable to find out due to reporting restrictions. Now the question seems to be: what will Mousavi do next?

No doubt about it, they cant control all the cell phones and the tweeting. they've pretty much shut down all other interactive access by everyone. All coverage is coming from the people on the streets and being relayed to blogs. I love technology.

mousavi has stated in his speech today hes ready to die.

also the reports of boiling hot water being thrown on the protesters is being disputed. People on the street are screaming bio terrorism. just sick.

Reports: Bassij Opedn gunfire on People Near Shahrak Sadeghieh, West of Tehran.

11.50 am. The regime's mojo is to fabricate a terror threat from outside to buttress their power-grab at home. Michael Roston:

An Al Jazeera analyst suggests that a Mujahedeen-e-Khalq bomber carried out the attack. That would be convenient because MEK has been constructed as a stand-in for the Bush administration in Iran since America invaded Iraq. Instead of shipping MEK, a group that’s on the American list of foreign terrorist organizations, off to Iran for trial, the Bush administration allowed the Iranian-origin but anti-Islamic Republic group to continue to stay in Iraq, where Saddam Hussein had long ago given the group safe haven.

So, If Iranian officials are suggesting that MEK was involved, it’s a useful rumor to spread because it’s their way of saying, “America and its proxies bombed Iran.”

Also worth pointing out that earlier in the week, the Iranian outlet I quote above reported that Iranian authorities had foiled a bomb plot on election day. The officials claimed the the group attempting the bombing had confessed to working for Israel.

11.47 am. A reader infers the chemical weapon:

Probably CS tear gas crystals mixed in water which is why washing it off only makes it worse. Mixing it in water like the reports would be the most efficient usage of the CS agent

What you don't seem to understand is that they aren't protesting for democracy; the people who want to be in office still hold the same major beliefs as the people who are already in office.
9. I do not have the historical background that many others on this site do, but I enjoyed reading a ton on past political meltdowns/genocides, etc in my politics classes in undergrad. That said, I really don't think Mousavi will be killed. I know he's prepared to die, but he has such a strong force behind him - the majority of it moving peacefully - that this would be a complete disaster if the basiji execute him (or he just dies in all of the chaos). I would be willing to bet that Khomeini and the main body of the Iranian gov't are destroyed or overthrown by the end of the year if Mousavi is, in fact, killed.

This shit gives me chills. Not in the good way.

I feel so awful for the people there. Most dont know iranians avg age is 33 yeards old. The youth mostly supports the west, and stray away from the mullah in every way. They are educated, oppressed, and sick of it.

Lets bomb them though, they look brown and stuff.

15. I bet the cia/israel had a hand in this. Iran is a problem, bombing is pretty much out of the question, so why not have the country tear its self apart from the inside. Then they can put in power whomever they want, its has been done before in the middle east.

and this. Only if the citizens of North Korea would hold mass protests...
19. I'm not real middle east savvy....but I was very surprised to learn the Iranian people aren't like the stereotypical middle eastern population. They don't wear the stupid sheets as clothes. They don't all have the turbans on their heads. They don't all have long nasty matted beards. They don't force their women to cover their faces. And they certainly don't look like government sheep. At least they are standing up for what they believe. I don't know what their beliefs are, but they probably don't like us too much no matter who is in charge over there.

North Korea is loving this little diversion so they can make more nukes while people aren't looking.

exactly right. In fact you wouldnt see this in any other muslim country except maybe turkey.

edit: to note, imo, this has much more to do with defying the mullah and ahmedinijad then supporting mousovi. Doesnt matter who the opposition is, if they see their regime not giving them a fair election, they scream for freedom.

22. Yeah, I hope all the people calling for us to bomb Iran take some time to realize these people aren't that different than us. Also, half the population is under the age of 25. Pro-western feelings are very high among those young Iranians. But if a single US bomb falls on Iran, all those pro-western feelings will disappear for (another) generation.
23. live streaming vid of iran situation. Wait for infomercial to end in the beginning.

Let me be more clear. Anyone who was running for office, and didn't win, have the same MAJOR beliefs as A-jad that concern US and other western societies, ie; nuclear advancement and the US being zionist pigs.

LOL absolutely hilarious.

as far back as 2001, I read that Iran had the potential to be an ally with the US bc the population was the most "westernized" and had the largest educated percentage in the middle east. The Iranians have used satellite tv and internet access for a while now and the information and urge for freedome can only be helped by these facts.

gl to the protesters

and gl to the Chinese people Some of us haven't forgotten about you.
I think they are about to have a counter revolution and this is a good example of why China is so afraid of allowing uncensored access to the Chinese people. The demand for freedom is strong and once the fight starts, it is hard to stop it without a massive response which can only harm the image of the govt.
