  1. I am at a crossroad with a job decision and can't really decide so I need some outside influence.

    Job 1.
Retail sales. Fulltime, benefits, Vacation, sick days, holiday pay etc. I dont need medical since the wife carries that. $10/hr plus commissions. I have 2 friends who have worked for this company at another location, but they say this location has more sales. This location seems to have many people leaving, so would be more sales personally, but it is slightly alarming that all these people are leaving right now. They are leaving on good terms with 2 week notice. Friend 1 made $28,000 last year part time, 30 hours a week, roughly. Friend 2 worked fulltime and made $52,000. 25 min commute without traffic/weather. 1hr+ with rush hour or any snow/ice. This is not a long term career choice.

    Job 2.
Temporary contract. Likely 1 year contract, but can be eliminated on a whim, in theory as a temp worker. $17/hr, weekly pay, standard 9-5 no weekends, overtime possibly available, not required. Office job, no performance bonus, no PTO, realistic expectations for workload, work is for a large industry leader and MAY have opportunities for advancement internally in the future. Office is 4 blocks away. This COULD lead to a position in my career choice field.

  2. I would take job 2 in a heartbeat. I'm not a salesman so job 1 likely wouldn't earn me more money than job 2 especially with added cost of gas plus loss of up to 2 hours a day commuting. Plus, I would be willing to make sacrifices for an opportunity in my career choice field.
  3. job 2 and its really not even close

  5. Job 2, easily.

    It pays better hourly.
    It's closer
    It's probably better experience/resume wise
It has relevance to your long term career field.

  6. By opportunity, I mean that this employer employs between 200,000 and 400,000 people. Having worked for this organization, would be a leg up on others applying for the same job. It does seem that more companies show interest when you have been "trained in" by a Fortune 100 company.

I think income potential for job 1 is 45-55k+. But bullshit factor of duties, and working in retail with customers is an 8.5 of 10.

  7. As long as the amount you will make in Job 2 will still cover your expenses take it.

Anything that is relevant work history and job experience is 100x more important for your professional career development than a dead end retail job.
  8. If you got the skills....

Job 1 easily. Know a guy that made roughly 30 an hour in retail sales (not cars) but big ticket items from a retail dealer recently. No degree / sweat / hard work required. Just networking. Walks in nice and dressed and leaves looking like he never did a thing. roughly 60K a year doing BS sales.

8 out of 10 jobs that go thru temp usually cut and reload at the end of your period.

If you don't think you can sell bail now tho. nothing wrong w/ 17/hr still got money to blow eventually.

i work in retail so 8.5 out of 10 for that price is not bad.

details on Job 2 is what need? income potential? field? job duties? etc. etc.
  9. I've worked retail sales, #2 is the choice to live, #1 to die slowly
  10. Job #1 basically being a dead end, take #2 and keep your eyes and your options open. Gain experience relevant to your goals, and always be networking. Good luck.

I quote this for a reason,
  12. retail sucks.

you list a negative as job 2 can let you go at any time since its not gaurenteed, what's to say job 1 won't let you go if things go bad? they'll cut you in retail faster than any other industry.
  13. I'm taking job 2, but job 1 really isn't that awful. Employers love seeing a background in sales, commission based sales, and constant customer interaction. Job 2 will also be in a lot more laid back of an atmosphere. Obviously the main goal is to set yourself up for better future opportunities so you can overlook the fact that "working retail steals your soul". I'm taking job 1 with the closer location, consistent hours and workload, chance to move up within the company, and that's pretty damn good pay for a temp position. Getting paid weekly may seem nice, but everyone should be able to manage their spending to handle a bi-weekly paycheck.
  14. You might decide you want a sales career. Good salespeople are always in demand; that can't be said for the vast majority of employees who are payroll overhead on paper. #2 sounds more "dead-end" to me. You have no control over what you earn, and have no idea how long the job will exist.
  15. Job 2 (just based on distance from home). I've lived no more than 10 minutes from work the past 4 years and then they moved out whole fucking office, now it takes me 20 min in the morning and dependIng on weather 30min+ to go back home, which isn't much to some of you, but to me that shit is fucking bullshit

Try living in Atlanta... 15 miles from my office, 45min - 1hr each day... its Brutal.

My dream is to be able to work close to home, im like you... HATE the commute
  17. Well the thing was it used to be a 5 minute drive to and from so I'd be able to go home for lunch and see my son, eat in peace, maybe catch some sportscenter

On top of that, being 5 minutes away would give me the luxury of sleeping until the absolute last possible minute before I had to go to work (used to wake up at 7:45 to be at work at 8, and 8:15 when I started at 8:30...now it's 6:45 so I could be there at 7:30 fuck that shit in the goat ass)

Also now I either have to waste my money on getting food, make myself something before I leave (which I almost never have enough time to do)
  18. What skills will you need to start your own business down the line? Pick the job that will further that objective.

I have worked in sales and enjoy "control" of my paycheck, but retail hours/retail management typically frustrate me. Hell, I am frustrated by the fact it takes them a month to workout making me an offer when they are shorthanded by 3 employees already and I don't work for them yet. Most of my coworkers would be 18-23 yr old kids too. If the increase in pay wasn't substantial it wouldn't even be a choice.

I worked as a temp for this company before, and my project was eliminated and the only notice I had was a call 15 mins after my shift on Friday to turn in my badge and not report to work on Monday.

What do you take 1/2 hr or longer to wash out your vagina? Im a guy, I can shower brush my teeth and be dressed in 10 min

Reason: Shower/brush teeth, get dressed: 10 min...driving to work in 5...15 min total ez game
  22. Job 2. Job 1 seems like a temporary solution to not having a job. In a year are you going to be happy you took it? Probably not. Just take job 2 and go with it, if you happened to get let go after a year you can always try for job 1 again. If you don't, you might end up landing a nice job in your field and be 10x happier. anything > retail. People are such dbags when they don't have anyone to answer to.
