I use it but not as well as I should. Im working with people now to make my profile and such better as im graduating w my masters in 2 weeks..suggestions so far: join networks to which you want a job in the field..connect to friends in whichever way possible, family members, friends, business people..
i havent personally gotten anything for jobs out of it yet but i also used other methods when i was unemployed for 9 months then again..
i was a landscape architect..i found LA companies, researched them, specific things they do in the field, sent a cover letter, resume, portfolio..i sent out prolly around 500 in the summer of 2009..i sent them to companies whether or not they said if they are hiring. sometimes you get more hits w companies that dont have ads up..i hated monster, career builder..i used indeed.com, simplyhired.com..and some other ones..
be proactive..check on things, be professional in writing in your cover letter..have a friend look over ur resume for formating, verb tense, etc..i found my job with a company that didnt have any postings for a job..PM me if you have any questions

I'm an executive recruiter, I talked to 40-60 people per day. Invaluable for myself obviously but many professionals I've spoken with have told how they either have used it in the past to get themselves a company or industry they were pursuing or were currently in the process of pursuing.
You have tremendous visibility by building out your profile there. You can access and introduce yourself to key people that can get you in the door. Simply invaluable -
i have just started to finally use my LinkedIn account and have found it extremely useful and a great way to start networking. for me it was as simple as joining the MSU alumni group where there are job seekers, postings, discussion boards, etc. i'm currently trying to use it to find out about working abroad.

I moved to Chi a couple months ago to continue my job search. I'm trying to get in an agency, obviously something entry-level. Agency jobs are incredibly popular so the they're in high demand. Applying through the website isn't effective (for me) because I don't have any agency experience. I do have good experience, but they look for agency internships in ppl's resumes.
LinkedIn is extremely helpful. I will give you an example of how I use it:
I search for University of Wisconsin alums/Marketing/Chicago and reach out to as many as I possibly can. People are always willing to help, especially if you're both alums from the same school. I say a little about myself, what I'm looking to do, and ask if they'd be willing to meet. They may not be hiring at their company, but networking is THE most effective way to find a job. And if I can get one contact from each meeting, that's fine with me. I've had three interviews in Chi so far and they've all been from networking.
I also search "recruiter" and just reach out to them if they're in Chicago and Marketing. Again, talking with them and learning about the company is still helpful. They may know of other companies that are hiring and refer you to someone else they know.
So yea, LinkedIn is amazing. I have two interviews next week that I got from networking, hopefully I will finally be able to put an end to this shit.
GOOD LUCK -
I found LinkedIn pretty much useless.
But I was selling coke -

LinikedIn is a great place to find jobs. Jobs on there are way more creditable than Craig's List, Monster, etc. Additionally, if you have a LinkedIn profile you'll eventually get calls from other companies trying to snatch you up.
When I interview people first thing I check before calling is whether they have a LinkedIn profile or not. -
My linkedin page is #3 ranked search when you google my first and last name.
My full name is one of the most common names in Latin America
I got BGX in linkedin
