The Twins released Philip Humber today, who was a key piece of the Johan trade a year ago. Can we now call this one of the worse trades of all time? Carlos Gomez looks like a fourth outfielder, and the Mets got one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball. They could have kept him for his last year, and got two first round draft picks as compensation instead of trading him.
-
We're gonna call it the worst trade just now? Why not last year? In all seriousness Gomez has a chance to be a very good player but thats about it. Bad yes, but I'm not sure its one of the worst ever. Remember, the Twins once traded AJ Pierzynski to the Giants for Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano.

google Von Hayes trade
-
Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocum
or
Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson -
top 3? whose better?
-
NOTHING will ever be worse than the Dodgers trading Pedro Martinez for a piece of shit 2B, whose name i refuse to say.
another one that turned out to be pretty bad was the expos trading cliff lee, brandon phillips, and grady sizemore to the indians for bartolo colon and lee stevens. -
and Boof Bonser

If this was the actual trade it's the winner. The most lopsided sports deal I've ever heard.
-
bobby hill, matt bruback, and jose hernandez for aramis ramirez and kenny lofton... with trades like that, its really clear why the pirates are the pirates
-
The reason why I wouldn't count the Sizemore trade is because the Expos were trying to save the franchise.. They thought that the only way they could make a case to stay in montreal was to make the playoffs that year.

The reason this Johan trade is so terrible is because the Mets got a player that can single handily change the outcome of a playoff series. Johan is a freak. The fact that the Twins couldn't even get the Mets best prospect at the time (Fernando Martinez) is a joke. -
am I really the one that has to bring up Kazmir for Victor Zambrano? siiigh
EDIT: oooops, sorry "detucf" -
"What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year! He's got a rocket for an arm... You don't know what the hell you're doing!"
-
my baseball people loved Ken Phelps' bat. they kept saying "Ken Phelps! Ken Phelps!"
-
lol this is the trade I came to mention. It's sooo fucking funny to see now after everything is said and done
-
The day after the Colon trade the Indians fans went absolutely nuts. They booed at the following game for no reason and everybody on the radio wanted to fire Shapiro immediately. We were like 5 games back at the time and traded our ace. Phillips was the key to the deal and we wanted Brad Wilkerson but settled for Sizemore.
-
For those too lazy to Google this, the Walker trade single handedly led to the Cowboys winning three super bowls in the 90's. They got a shitload of no name players and a shitload of draft picks and simply cut all the old guys and drafted Emmitt Smith and Darren Woodson amoing others.
-
Karim Garcia for Luis Gonzalez.

What's a Boof Bonser?

The Lou Brock trade is by far the most lopsided trades in baseball history: speedy outfielder Lou Brock of the Cubs for St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Ernie Broglio. The trade occurred on June 15, 1964. Brock went on to have over 3,000 hits and become the all-time leading base stealer, surpassing Ty Cobb (in 1991, Brock's record was broken by Rickey Henderson). Broglio went on to win just seven more games in his career.
-
Mark McGwire for Blake Stein, T.J. Matthews, and Eric Ludwick is another lopsided one.
-
The reason I think the Kazmir trade, Brock trade, Bagwell trade, etc. aren't as bad as the Johan trade is because the Twins knew exactly what Johan was when they traded him... he was the best pitcher in baseball. All of the other guys you are mentioning were prospects. A lot of "Can't miss" prospects end up as busts or just average major leaguers. The Twins traded the best pitcher in baseball and couldn't even get the teams best prospect for him. I mean how happy must Omar Minaya have been when they said yes to that package.
-
In 4-5 years the Texas-Atlanta trade for Mark Teixiera may look like one of the worst trades ever, even if the main component of the trade turns into a bust.
Elvis Andrus is usually overlooked in this deal, as he was the 2nd or 3rd main piece in the deal, and Neftali Feliz was like a throw in, and he's now one of the top 5 pitching prospects in all of baseball. -
Holy revisionist history batman.
Facts are facts. The Twins had absolutely no suitors for Johan. If you remember correctly that was the year the red Sox (somewhat made sense) and the Yankees (inexplicably) wouldn't pony up top tier prospects for Santana because they were faced wit the prospect of giving him a monster deal and giving up cheap talent.
Remember it the Yankees who refused to give Ian Kennedy and Mekly Carbera up to get Johan. If they had done that deal we eassssssily could be having the same thread only with Johan pitching for the Yankees. Not sure how more hasn't been made of this. At least in the Sox case the Twins were demanding Jon Lester which looks like it made sense to keep him given the value of his contract. But how the Yankees ever convinced themselves that Kennedy was a top tier starter is BEYOONNNND me. I was never sold on Melky either but i think keeping him was a lot more explainable at the time.
The Twins had a very very short list of options. The whole Santana trade was just very strange that no one was willing to pony up prospects for him for a single season(there was a lot of talk he had a bumb elbow) especially considering what CC fetched at the last trade deadline -
And the fact that before he'd agree to a trade he wanted a shiny new 6-year contract. I wouldn't sign any pitcher to a deal over four years, they're just too fragile.
