Should their be some kind of law in place that says "If you come to the US (or any other country you should have to know and speak the native language"?
Maybe I'm a bit harsh but a couple of things from this past week have got me thinking.
I work in bum fuck nowhere Wisconsin. 7 mexicans come in and they only speak spanish. I pretty much had to guess what they wanted and needed for 2 hours all for one fucking cell phone. It would've taken 15 minutes had they known English. I understand that if I go to Mexico I should probably know some Spanish, so why don't they understand?
I was watching TruTV last night. The story about the Polish guy who was killed by the tazers in Canada by the Mounted Police was on. That guy only spoke Polish, had he known some English, they predicted that the conflict that took place would have been taken care of easily HAD HE KNOWN HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH!
Why the fuck should we as US citizens need to learn foreign languages just to function in our own country?
Maybe I'm just a huge prick, I'll take the heat.

100% agree.

Cosign.

^^ That took longer than expected.

I agree that people should try to learn the language. I never ever complain if a person is trying to learn the language of the land but I can't stand when somebody asks to an employee of a store "Does anyone here speak English" or they have their child translate.
However, America does not have an official language -
You should audition for The Amazing Race. I'm sick of them getting people on that show who go to countries like China or Chad and bitch because no one speaks English. At least you make the effort to learn some Swahilideshigu.
-
dont agree......if you go to france should you speak french......germany should u should speak german ect ect ....... I understand your frustration but im gonna go w/ a negative on this one
-
If a person decides to live in a certain country, then I think they should learn to speak the language. Agree 100%.
-
I agree
-
Exactly, and even if you go somewhere as a tourist make the fucking effort to learn some basic communication.
-
i agree w/this post 100% i complain about this all the time...i live in NY more ppl speak spanish then english.....and indians and asians are migrating here at ridiculous rates and most of them can't speak english drives me nuts
i also despise when i call automated numbers, and i have to press 1 to hear in english...tilts me BAD -
You're calling another country most of the time you dial those numbers.
-
My wife works as a labor and delivery nurse, in a less than nice part of town. Well they get the bottom of the barrel as far as clients go. Some include mexican's. Well she says they always expect her to speak spanish, which is ridiculous. If you want to come here, you should have to take english lessons along with all the other requirements for citizenship.
-
nah im referring to when i call verizon, or bank of AMERICA, etc
-
I agree with this post 100%. My ancestors learned to speak english. Everyone who wants to live here should learn it. I could go on but I dont feel like wasting my time.
-
more likely than not, your ancestors (at least the first ones who came to america) did NOT learn english. their children did, and then the third generation learned english only (forgetting the native language the majority of the time).

people who say "my ancestors did it" are ignorant. -
listen i agree 100% with you on this matter. before anyone enters the country they should have some language test, if you fail they feed you to sharks.
an heres another thing i was wondering.. when i was back in high school you were REQUIRED to take a language class.. so i went through them all.. spanish.. ill never go to mexico , french ill never go to france .. german .. ill never go to germany... so i figured i might as well take spanish.. it was by far the worst fucking class i ever took, and it made me about 150% more dumb than i already was. -
The polish guy didnt necessarily need to learn English, French is an official language too.
pm LFR -
Dpottz suck on a fat one. Like I said my ancestors learned it and there for anyone willing to move to this country should learn it.
-
but you don't know what you're talking about. you're assuming something is true that you know nothing about. i gave the more likely scenario.
-
let's think this over. what will the penalty be for this law? deportation? how do you prove this? is there some "required score" on a test? how are you going to handle this logistically?
is it really hard to just let people do generally what they want? if you don't want to deal w/ people who don't speak english, then don't. -
so OTHER people should have to learn other languages, but not you.

no, i dont think other people have to learn the languages... that is why america is f'ed up. foreigners come and contaminate this country with their other languages which make us english speaking people to somewhat learn this crap.

I lived in Germany for my first 2 years in the Army (minus Bosnia and Kosovo trips). In the Year plus I was physically there, I learned to speak Deutsch pretty well. I could understand almost everything, and speak enough to convey what I wanted (getting women's panties off obv).
When you come to the states, you should make the same effort IMO. -
seriously? that's why america is f'd up? because people w/ different languages live here, too?
