Very good movie. Denzel is phenomenal, as always. 8.5/10.
Also, please stop with the comparisons to Scarface. The movies couldn't be more different. Just because Scarface and American Gangster both involve druglords doesn't mean they're about the same thing. A Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas Vacation both involve the holidays...it doesn't mean they're the same type of movie.
Scarface=cult classic but garbage as far as movies go.
American Gangster=good story, great character development, and awesome performances.
I liked it a lot. I think it's going to have a lot of rewatchability, too. I may go see it again in the theater.
Highly recommended. -
and a multi vitamin
-
wait, are you saying the development of tony montana wasnt good? or good acting? sure its over the top, but that was the idea. dont write scarface off as garbage because it was over the top.
-
Scarface is a made for tv TNT original type of movie. Yes, it's a classic, but just because of Pacino's over the top performance.
-
lol.
Yes, I'm saying that exactly. Pacino was good. The rest of the acting was terrible.
More importantly, I'm saying that Tony Montana was an out-of-control lunatic who snorted his life away. Frank Lucas was calm, cool, and collected. Their methods were 180 degrees different.
I've seen Scarface a few times. As far as movies go, it's pretty shitty. Sorry to burst your bubble. I've also seen Puppet Master II a few times, too.
EDIT: bgjoecool nailed it. that's a great analogy. -
The only thing that the movies have in common is the head guys and a little bit of the glorification of crime.
-
but have you seen woodpooping?
-
Dont you dare pull the PUPPET MASTER MOVIES INTO THIS!!!
-
I have American Gangster on DVD (an Oscar Screener) is it a movie I need to watch on a big screen?
-
No what you need to do is send it to me.
-
Right now I have 3:10 To Yuma, American Gangster, and Things We Lost In the Fire. I'm sure I will be getting a lot more.
-
tottaly agree with scarface being a junk movie, cant understand why some people are obsessed with it.
-
I have a mancrush on Denzel as well, along with Edward Norton. I like everything they both put out.
-
I definitely have a mancrush on Edward Norton also. Own just about all of his movies. 25th hour is the shit.
-
Actually this movie was really inaccurate as Frank Lucas was loud and flashy not nicky barnes . I think it was good but some info was mis informing.
-
What's with the retroactive Scarface hate? Scarface is a better directed movie than anything Ridley Scott has done.
-
American History X is my favorite role by him, no doubt
Love Denzel too, I haven't seen a movie with him that I don't like -
i saw it too and it was a little inaccurate they had a special on the history channel about him last night with nicky barnes
and he was the falshier one out of the two but he was also a great businessman and knew exactly what to do.
like 9.0/10 -
LOL.....LOL....this is an utterly laughable statement. Scarface is aterrible film. LMAO @ it being a better movie than Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down or even the Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut. Seriously, I needed a good laugh.
-
Scarface was very entertaining the first time you watched it...after that *SNORE*
-
Wow.
-
i dont give a shit about how well directed cinematographied a movie is, it is what it is. And scarface is overrated
-
A movie can be entertaining and still be a bad movie.
-
I agree
Anchorman was very entertaining, however it was a horrrrible movie -
I was impressed by the film too. It didnt really feel like it was 2 1/2 hours long which is always a good sign. The only thing I felt was the end felt rushed. Kinda like they ran out of paper when they were writing it.
-
Bubba cmon...
Alien and Blade Runner(his best movie, by far.) are held together by Sigourney Weaver and Rutger Hauer/production design, respectively.
Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven are above average action/adventure/drama movies, nothing more.
Maybe Scarface is a "sum is not equal to its parts" scenario for alot of ppl, but, IMO, the purely cinematic moments it reaches make up for any other deficencies. -
Honestly, Scarface is a piece of crap. I find none of it to be a moving, or effective cinematic experience, and I even hate Pacino's performance. Yea, I realize it was intended to be over the top, but I still hate it. I also hate Brian De Palma. All of the movies I listed are 10 times better in every aspect you could name.
