  1. I've been shopping around for a kayak, really have no clue what I'm doing. I've done a lot of rafting but never kayaking. I plan on doing some heavy white water shit, waterfalls and such, but I also wanna be able to cruise on flat water. I think I've narrowed it down to a creek boat being what I'm looking for, or a river runner.

I'm about 6'1" 230, so if any brands run extra volume that'd help, I checked out a super EZ today but couldnt even get my legs into it.

any tips or brands I should look for/look out for? I'm doing a bunch of research on my own but I like to check with OT before I make any purchase over 18$.

any sites I should check out other than craigslist? I'm in a pretty big rafting area (asheville) so I should have a lot to choose from... I'm hoping to find some kinda swap meet or something.

what kinda gear do you use? helmet/vest/paddle is all I know about, anything else I'll need?

I'm looking at a big EZ tomorrow for 200, but I read online that they are incredibly slow on flat water so I think i'm gonna pass

any advice at all would help, thanks

  4. Dude get a Paddle board, I love mine and you can see so much more. Its very easy to do and way better excercise.

    * Edit - It wont work for river rapids. NVM.

  5. I have a sit-on-top fishing kayak, so I don't really have any advice for the OP, but I will take a minute and talk about how awesome sit-on-tops are. First of all, if you fall out of a sit-on-top, you just get back in. It's basically a floatation device in itself since it can't fill up with water. Luckily I've never fallen out on accident, but I have practiced falling out on purpose and getting back in and it's pretty easy.

Mine has 2 dry wells...1 in front and 1 in back. Open storage and straps in the back. 2 vertical rod holders behind the seat and 1 adjustable rod holder in front. I use a paddle leash so the paddle is attached to the kayak at all times in case you lose it while fishing. I highly recommend a sit-on-top to anyone, even if you don't fish and just want casual flat water paddling, but obviously not for fast water.

This is what I'm talking about (this is not me in the pic btw)...

  6. yeah that and the paddle board both look like fun, but i am looking to get injured

Mostly bass fishing on smaller lakes in upstate NY. But even while bass fishing I catch a lot of pickerel and a few other random fish.
  11. The sit on type is great for fishing but I think for what you want to do the sit in variety is better. Make sure you get one with several dry storage areas. Dont go real short as they are hard to control. It will want to turn with each stroke. For your size Im guessing something in the 11ft range. Just a guess tho. Definately go to a Dicks , Gander Mt , Cabelas or something similar and sit in them to see what fits you comfortably. Lastly dont try to cheap out on it . You will get what you pay for with kayaks.
