Gotta learn mandarin...... going to be very useful soon.. already taking over the bigger cities in canada! Im learning some right now via dating a girl, I could see myself learning to speak but good luck ever gettin me to learn how to write that.... theres like 1 billion symbols to remember!

Definitely this. I have studied Spanish, but it became a lot better after dating a Colombian. His Spanish was very clear and he was a good teacher in that respect. Going abroad and watching a lot of foreign films has also helped. In Aug/Sept I start intensive French classes. I've also taken Mandarin and studied in China. OP do it. You will open yourself up to a whole new variety of people and conversations. And it definitely helps in certain careers. Check out meetup.com foreign language gatherings which may occur locally in your area. When you go these groups speak only in the foreign language which is good for pushing yourself. This is something else I've signed up to get involved in too. Good luck!

English is obviously the greatest because you can get people to pay you to travel around the world and speak your own language. Also fluent in Japanese and my Spanish, though absurdly rusty, used to be there too. Currently learning Bahasa Malaysia, but aside from being almost functionally identical to Bahasa Indonesia, it isn't going to travel well and it doesn't help with the Chinese or Tamil speakers here.
Chinese is the #1 to have right now, Arabic will get you jobs as well, and Spanish takes you to lots of cool places. However, since the World Cup in 2014 is in the mother of all party places, the next one on my agenda is Portuguese. -
fluent in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

When I learned Portuguese I was living in Brazil for 4 months. I decided to speal as little english/spanish as possible. I would also start conversations with everyone. people in buses, taxi drivers, security guards, my maid, etc... -
The world isn't going to learn Mandarin. The Chinese are going to learn English.
Learning Mandarin or whatever language is obviously beneficial and will open doors for you but English is the international language and that isn't dependent on who the next super power is. -
Kind of moot when OP already speaks english...

i think this guy's blog is really interesting. his big thing is to start speaking the language as soon as possible instead of waiting around till you can speak "perfectly." -

True, but wasn't a response to OP. Was a reply to people saying Chinese is the language of the future. Mandarin is a great language to pick up, but English is the language of both today and tomorrow. Anybody who doesn't speak English is going to be left behind. It's an advantage India has over China for example. They get so much high tech outsourcing in places like Banglore because they speak English (even if inaudible! with those thick accents).
I'm not one to talk because I suck with languages but that is pretty damn obvious. Some people are really gifted at languages, I have met a few people who can pick up sooo much in such a short time frame, it's really impressive. A girl I was traveling with in Thailand recently had only been there for like 3 weeks and already knew more Thai than most expats who have been living there for a year and tell you "it's a hard language". Some people are gifted and others don't put in the effort to actually learn. She was 20 or 21 and spoke 5 languages fluently. A lot of Europeans speak multiple languages, but she definitely had a giftOriginally Posted by SevenCostanza
