Dont you owe it to Nike and your $100 million to go out there and join the slam dunk contest atleast once?<A target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2313651">

"I don't want to be defined as being in the slam dunk contest, it's just not me."
well i guess you dont wanna be defined as a winner, because playoffs aren't really you. -
ummm he's only 21 dude....only 21. slam dunk contest is lame anyway, no one really cares about some arbitrarily judged event. It's all about the 3pt shootout. So keep hating because you're mad that you can't see the best player in the league do some tricks, meanwhile lebron will make it to the playoffs and win a series or 2.
-
fuck the east coast. jv league
-
hes a donk, he completes in the HS dunk comp, but once he sees that his lame ass dunks dont do anygood in the pros, he runs and hides behind the media.
-
He's not eligible after this year. BTW, Both Jordan and Kobe won the dunk contest. Think about it.
Look out for infiniteouts.com -
I too think it's pretty weak of Lebron. He's one of my favs, and I think he does owe it to his legions of fans to do it atleast ONCE. I don't see how he could be worried about losing or getting embarassed, since he pwned the dunk contest in high school. Supposedly he's still mad about getting snubbed on the all-star team his rookie year, so that may have something to do with it.
The dunk contest isn't what it once was. It's almost like the top guys are above that now. Come on, you think Lebron wants to go against Hakim Warrick and Nate Robinson? If somehow the league can bring out all the top guys (Kobe, VC, Richardson, etc.) for a lucrative first prize, I bet you'd see Lebron out there. But for the time being, the 3 pt shootout is the better event. -
I dont blame him. He is like a Richard Jefferson type of Dunker. He can throw down a monster while being guarded but that same dunk doesnt look so great when he is by himself. I would rather see him in the skills competion against Nash than in a dunk contest against Josh Smith.
-
Anyone remember the high school dunk contest he was in? His dunks were all about power, but they weren't impressive at all. Sure, his head gets above the rim on every dunk - that is amazing - but he's really only doing a standard dunk each time. He doesn't try anything creative, and he doesn't "float" in the air like Josh Smith and Vince Carter do.
And by the way, people talk about the dunk contest being on a downswing. I beg to differ. There is not one person in the world that can do what Jason Richardson does. The bounce off the backboard, between the legs dunk was so underrated. People forget how incredible that was. Man, that might never be topped. -
The winner will receive $35,000, the runner-up gets $22,500 and the third and fourth finishers get $16,125 each.
They should make it 1st place $100k 2nd $50k and 3rd and 4th $25k. Then have V C, Lebron, J Rich and Steve Francis in it. -
i just hope when chris anderson rejoins the league in two years, he will be back in the dunk contest. that guy is a hardcore dunker. real solid.
-
1) All the posters above are IDIOTS
2) LeBron competed in two dunk contests in HS, so he cant say he wont ever be in one.
3) LeBron is the BEST dunker in the NBA. POWER + GRACE + WOW FACTOR -
lebrons dunks are all the same. u ever see him do a 360 dunk or a different dunk besides the one he does. he jumps really high and dunks the ball real hard. thats not gonna win a dunk contest. therefore he will never be in one until he creates a few dunks worthy of winning. oh yea btw. im from cleveland too.
hail lenny -
Yeah, more money is what they need.
-
dunking contests are on par with MLB having a sliding home contest. Tall people jumping, what a treat.
hail lenny -
"It's all about the 3pt shootout"
lol -
NEWSFLASH..... Nate Robinson = 5'9"
-
umm aren't dunking contests on a par with MLB having a Home Run Derby, and we know they'd never do that!! Oh, wait............
-
3 point shooting contest = home run contest
dunking = sliding home head first
if you think jumping 3 feet in the air to drop a ball into a basket is on par with hitting a 98 mph fastball 400+ feet, you are just dumb as dirt -
All valid points, however the similarity I was trying to draw was the wow factor of an innovative slam which is comparable to the wow factor of a 480ft bomb in the HR derby. In terms of skill the 3pt contest is closer to the HR derby than the slam dunk, i will accept that.
-
and how many people are blocking the basket? < 1
-
NATE ROBINSON is still 5'9"
-
A guy that's 80 lbs overweight chewing tobacco can compete and maybe win a HR derby. The same can't be said for the dunk contest. So I would agree that they aren't on par.
I'm sick of baseball fans talking about how hard it is to hit a round ball with a round bat. Who cares? Snooker is really hard too but noone is arguing about them being the most impressive athletes. -
JD that is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard in my life. I don't contest that basketball takes more ahtleticism than baseball, that we all know...but to compare a baseball player to a guy playing snooker or and 80lb dude chompin their grinders on a ball of cancer is absurd. Baseball and the higher levels of baseball in particular takes immense talent, coordination, determination, and natural skill...don't try and argue otherwise, thats just ridic.
PS - F the NBA. NCAA is what it's about. -
Then let him join the Olympic high jumping contest if he's so good.
-
I have little respect for baseball, one reason being that it is the only (major or semi major) sport where people can be unathletic and overweight and still play at the highest levels. I'm not denying it takes a great deal of coordination at the plate (that is only one aspect of the game), but it's about the only sport that you can play (or watch) and take a nap at the same time.
And trying to argue otherwise that the NBA isn't pound for pound, a collection of the greatest athletes on the planet would be ridiculous. They simply defy the laws of human capability--7 footers who can speedily sprint up and down the court, fly high above the rim with 40" verticals, dribble, pass, and shoot with incredible acumen...nothing comes close in the level of athleticism and versatility.
