Writers for The Atlantic have made an Olympic sport out of missing the point. The Chen/VA battle has nothing to do with protecting women or minors, it has everything to do with class warfare and "social justice". Adrian Chen is an upper-class Asian, and VA is a low-class white guy. Chen found a great target that would generate a whole shit-ton of "two minute hate" (and played fast and loose with the truth to help sustain it).

For lots of people in Reddit and elsewhere, VA represents the ultimate in oppressordom - white guy taking advantage of women, "using his privilege to attack others", as someone on Gawker commented. Excuse me while I laugh until I cry. A poor white dude who works for a payday lending company and has a disabled wife who can't work is the big bad oppressor of Social Justice-types dreams. Meanwhile, people like Chen have exponential more real-life power than him, and yet still pretend they are speaking "truth to power". My left nut, they are.
Chen is being hailed a hero... for what? Creep-shaming some nobody on the internet? There are actual, real-life criminals who are abusing power, destroying lives, and profiting from it, but apparently Muckracking is about exposing sad loners who make black jokes and rape jokes to get a laugh. Someone call the Nobel committee. -
If it weren't for black and rape jokes my whole schtick wouldn't exist.
Sad. -

non-white is the new white, pretty soon we'll be picking strawberries n shit in mexico. all because of the elitist asian bullies picking on middle-class white men.
there oughta be a law. -
What's funny is that I am sure you think your response is informative, even relevant.

Edited By: Magnet Steve Oct 16th, 2012 at 07:48 PMThe point isn't that white men, as a whole, are oppressed (which is clearly retarded). My point was that, objectively, Adrian Chen has way more "privilege" than Michael Brutsch. However, Social Justice types stopped worrying about "class" a long time ago, and have made gender and race the most important distinctions. Therefore, VA was a worthy target of attack, even though the attack accomplishes precisely zero Social Justice goals. He was low-hanging fruit, designed for page views and self-satisfaction. It was easy, cause Chen knew that Brutsch, despite being a member of an "oppressor" class, had no way to fight back. Meanwhile, Corporate America keeps Corporate America-ing.Originally Posted by EyeKnows

I probably did miss your point, I'm a pretty shitty reader.
(None of this is a defense of VA's actions, and I don't understand why a subreddit like r/jailbait wasn't banned from the start, although, again, Chen intentionally exaggerated some of VA's "crimes". I just wonder if the same expose would have been run if VA was the same person, only rich.) -
lol steve are you really letting yourself get trolled this hard in a thread about trolling? C'mon man, you are way to smart for this shit haha.
-
If it was some rando, yeah, I wouldn't bother. However, EyeKnows has a posting history that actually makes his response plausible. If he's trolling, WPWPWP, but it ain't exactly a lock [maybe an sbjohn lock(e)].

EyeKnows has got me a few times. Dude is hard to figure out if he is serious or not most the time.

Now all these sub reddits are banning all gawker/dedspin/jezebel etc links, but they were such champions of free speech and stopping SOPA. The hypocrisy is just absurd. I mean when r/ponies or r/flowers bans the sites its bad but not many will notice, but once TIL did it yesturday shit got serious.
I understand VA is an easy scape goat and people can get behind banning him and ruining his IRL life (which is completely fucked up imo), but once they begin to censor things everything the site stands for is compromised. IDK what im trying to get at here, im just disappoint at Reddit's decision here
also VA was a solid troll but he was def creepy dude. -
update: looks like interview is thursday on Cooper 360

Reason: with the VA guy -
You can get a Ph.D in internet trolling? Wtf. Clearly I am doing something wrong
-
lol i wonder if i can get some transfer credits for the work i've done so far

when I hear any hint of the "plight of the white-man in America" it's hard to resist a poke.

my response was definitely troll-ish if not outright trolling.
I'd disagree that this article (attack as you put it) accomplishes "zero social justice" goals. I disagree that "social justice types" have forgotten about class. but maybe these are semantics disagreements.
and I disagree that VA had no way to fight back. the battle was definitely unbalanced but it almost always is.
