  1. Hundreds Of Pardons, Some For Killers, Spark Outrage In Mississippi

Just before he left office this week, outgoing Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (REPUBLICAN) issued more than 200 pardons or sentence reductions including more than a dozen to persons convicted of murder, manslaughter or other death-related crimes. And that has sparked outrage and calls for changes in the law that gives the state's governor such authority.

    Fat POS Ex-Gov
  2. I SUPPORT LAW AND ORDER!!!!!
  3. Unreal ...

Mississippi Public Broadcasting reports about one of the killer's crimes:

"David Gatlin ... was convicted of killing his estranged wife Tammy Gatlin in 1993 while she held their child."

  4. don't worry...they worked for the governor's mansion, so it makes it alright.
  5. Why is this a big deal, it happens all the time in tons of states... WGAF, im sure there is some reason he is pardoning certain criminals.
  6. Not sure why this is a "lol mississippi". This happens with every governor and president.

Each "had served part of their sentence in the Governor's Mansion as a trusty, a privilege awarded to well-behaved prisoners that allows them to live and work in the mansion. It is a custom in Mississippi for governors to pardon such trusties."" just sayin

I prefer not pardoning (depending on case obv) fwiw

Quite frankly this is a REALLY important point, coffee is life
  13. The next "lol Mississippi" thread will be about how they wrongful incarcerate people through miscarriages in their justice system. How the fuck can you criticize any of the pardons if you don't know any of the facts. Oh I get it. 200 is a big number. There must be something crazy happening here. This is a complete non story unless we get some details that make a pardon unreasonable for some reason, like when Clinton pardoned his donor buddy and even then, he has the pardon power. There's a reason they wait until they are about to leave office before they use it like this.

I wonder how many were non caucasians.
  14. it's enough to make a fella not want to vote !!!

    Read the article.

Its not the number of pardons Im criticizing, its the dozen or so people pardoned that "were convicted of murder, manslaughter or other death-related crimes."

"David Gatlin, convicted of fatally shooting his estranged wife in 1993 as she held her baby and wounding her friend; Joseph Ozment, convicted in 1994 of killing a man during a robbery; Anthony McCray, convicted in 2001 of killing his wife; Charles Hooker, sentenced to life in 1992 for murder."[/I]

    Here is another link.

  16. Well, if those are all the facts that the governor used in his decision I'm with you, but I wonder what he's done since 1993, besides work at the governor's mansion. I wonder how strong the evidence was. I wonder if anyone recanted their testimony. I wonder if... you should never be pardoned for committing a murder.

Can a governor or President abuse the power to pardon? Yes

Have governors or Presidents abused that power? Yes

Would you have to show me something more for me to think he has abused his power here, I mean other than some of these guys actually committed the heinous crimes they were accused of? Yes.

Republican says black. Democrat says white. Or at least take advantage of prevailing public opinion.
  21. More than likely, Haley Barbour has been doing something a bit rotten at the Governor's Mansion.

    Very interdasting.
