  1. MS is currently doing this with their latest version of Flight Simulator.. "Flight" to be released on Feb 29th. Used to be you'd purchase the game on disk and you'd get the whole world...40,000+ airports and a bunch of airplanes. They also allowed 3rd party developers (freeware and payware) to create more advanced sceneries, aircraft, liveries and assorted add-ons (flight decks, weather generators, AI aircraft, and other misc.) With Flight, you get the game for free via download which includes Hawaii (only the big island) and 2 airplanes. Everything else will be DLC for a fee from MS and the third party developers are left with their dicks swinging in the wind.

    edit

gamestop has 25% of the us market share in video game sales

Gamestop doesn't sell microsoft produects = Microsoft (more specifically, their xbox subsidiary) surivives
Gamestop doesn't sell microsoft produects = Gamestop doesn't survive.

Gamestop has a lot more to lose in that scenario.

And Blizzard is one of the best in the business and they can barely account for the traffic at times. The console market is 5-10x the base of the PC market so they may want to do it, we may have the capacity to receive it in that fashion, but would the delivery be feasible? Because any 1 game is 7-12 gigs easily(conservative), it'd be an interesting test for whatever new tech is on the horizon should cloud computing plateau.

Not that it makes much difference, but aren't xbox discs single layer DVDs, and max out at 4.7gb? Obviously ps3 is different, and there's some multi-disk games, but thats the minority.

  4. You really think Microsoft cares about the bottom line of fucking game stop? Its their in demand product, and Gamestop is just one retailer out of many. They have no say at all. That being said the idea is Nazi'ish to say the least. What do you do with your beat games? Just gonna reduce sales and people will rent from redbox instead of buying games.

    This...

Just seems like this new limit won't be able to be implemented for systems that aren't connected to xbox live, unless they pack in some cheap wireless cell-phone-esque transmitter to handle some communications without internet access. Seems like a no-brainer move for MS, Sony, and Nintendo for their next-gen consoles though imo.

Xbox discs are dual layer. The newer games, as of a few months ago, are about 8.5GB, and older games are about 7.6GB.

There's another point. If no used games... what happens to redbox/gamefly/etc.

Bandwidth as with all computing tech is improving at an exponential rate the struggles blizzard had in the past would not happen today IF they have spent money improving their hardware. by the time the xbox720 and ps4 come out we will have cellphone networks with top speeds over 100mbps just to give you an idea of where we are headed.
  9. So Sony and Nintendo decide that they will allow used games on their system, and then xbox becomes obsolete. Doubt that when the xbox720 actually comes out that Microsoft won't have changed their stance already.

  10. I would think that companies like Game Fly and others that rent games would be hurt a helluva lot more than Gamestop.

Doesn't make much sense to me.
