I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to computers, so if anybody is decent with Macs, a little help would be much appreciated.
Out of nowhere today, my Macbook locked up. Naturally, I powered it off, waited about 15 seconds, and restarted it. Instead of booting up, it got stuck on the grey screen with the apple in the middle...and just sat and spun for about 20 minutes before I finally powered down again.
It did the same exact thing on the 2nd restart, so I powered off again.
Did a google search and go to a forum that had about 5 possible fixes...I've tried most of them with no success.
Holding shift for safe mode won't get it to boot.
Command + S and typing "fsck -fy" at promp returns some error and won't boot it.
Command + V for verbose mode (whatever the fuck that is) won't get it to boot.
Resetting the PRAM (whatever the fuck that is) by holding down Command + Option + P + R won't get it to boot.
All of the other suggestions I'm too much of a computer n00b to have any idea how to try.
I know this isn't a Mac forum, but has anybody had the same problem? Does anybody have any new advice or possible fixes?
Thanks in advance. Let the Mac vs. PC troll show begin... -
First thing you need to do is destroy any device you have that has Internet access.
I'll tell you step two after you complete step one -
its the beginning of the end of that computer. good thing Christmas is around the corner

-
should have gotta PC...
-
throw some water on it
let it dry
then reboot. -
so you paid 2.5x the price of the equivalent pc laptop and it still doesn't work? sux bro
-
If you did a study between a Macbook pro and a PC laptop that is 2.5x less the price of said Macbook and all you used it for was porn over the course of the year, you will certainly get your moneys worth out of the Macbook.

If it ran for 6 years then you got your money's worth, move on. Can't remember the last time I had a laptop longer than 2 years, they just don't last forever.
-
This happened to me except I was stuck on a blue screen for a little too. Took it in and my hard drive was crashed.
-
fack...you just scrap it and get a new one?

i really don't care either way about Mac or PC, but i'm pretty sure some of the reason they are more expensive is b/c they are supposed to be more reliable, which generally translates into lasting longer.Originally Posted by voorh33s

obv 6 years is probably too long for any machine, but like i said--ran like a gem until today. -
I'd like to know what kind of voodoo you used to get a laptop to run 6 years.
-
Edited By: JRoth15 Nov 10th, 2011 at 01:14 AMI never visited the deep web obv.Originally Posted by Niceguy

I mean I watched plenty of porn...I honestly never had a problem with it. I don't know what to say.
Now I can't find the box/startup disk (shocker after 6 years amirite?)...guess I'll take it to the local Mac place tomorrow to get the bad news. -
Yeah, sounds like your hard drive is fried.
If all you want is a porn machine, asus has really good quality machines for cheap. -
I still had mine under warranty so they fixed it for free....I think it would have been $200 if I wasnt under warranty.

Thanks...I'll look into it.

Feared it was hard drive...aren't they supposed to make like a weird noise when the machine is starting if the hard drive is failing tho?
I know I had the AppleCare package or whatever...but have no idea where any of that info is.Originally Posted by Southpaw16

Was yours making like a squealing sound when starting? Or anything else out of the ordinary? How old was it when it failed? -
Not always.
Locking up and not loading can mean your disc is worn. After 6 years it's probably a shitty 5400rpm drive(if you're lucky).
Integrated video card going out wouldn't prevent booting, faulty motherboard wouldn't even boot up, so your drive can't read the partition your os is on, leading to the freeze. If you keep the machine, minimum get a 7200rpm drive, personally I'd splurge and get a SSD drive. There are even hybrids that have effective cost to performance. -
I'm a little skeptical taking this advice from a black man...I've never met a black guy in IT.
Just kidding...think I should just scrap it and get an iPad. But then I can't watch porn, can i? -
Just call Steve Jobs, he'll take care of it for you
-
Try taking out your battery and putting it back in, worked for me when I got blue screened.

And Mac > PC obv, I've had my MacBook almost 4 years now and it performs the same as it did the day I got it
EDIT: OP, have you got an external hard drive? I found mine ran a bit slow without it -
Don't listen to anyone who says "mac>pc obv".
And for the love of god, don't replace a laptop with a fucking ipad. -
When you start up a MacBook, it goes to a blue screen before actually loading the user interface (desktop, dock, programs, etc.) and, like OP, I got stuck on the blue start up screen
-
Why not? The only thing I'd lose would be the ability to watch porn...I think I'd survive.

Only thing I use my computer for is fantasy football, OT, e-mail, AIM...that's about it.
What would I be losing if I got an iPad?
Thx...I'll try this.Originally Posted by SlayNL

And no...no external hard drive. -
iPads are fucking toys. They are not a computer replacement. It is a giant iPhone that doesn't make calls. FUCK. I am so sick of people wanting iPads. They are useless. Maybe after a few evolutions but right now don't even think about trying to replace a computer with an iPad. That would be retarded.

Please, to the Apple fanboys, I am sure you love your iPad because Angry Birds plays so well on it but will one person who owns an iPad drop the "I <3 Apple soooooo much" routine and explain to Vorh33s that the iPad is not a computer replacement? -
Edited By: JRoth15 Nov 10th, 2011 at 02:44 AMlol you didn't address anything i just said.Originally Posted by PoWdA

i'm not a fucking graphics art major...i'm a 27 y/o dude who plays fantasy sports.
an iPad would be perfectly fine to fit my needs...plus be my kindle when traveling.
what do i need a laptop for that an iPad wouldn't fill sufficiently?
EDIT--since you apparently don't read well...i'm not saying it's a computer replacement. however, it would easily fill all my needs for 1/4 of the pice of a macbook.
