Lets not jinx this please..
The Manny Ramirez trade conversations are expected to continue into Thursday, according to a source. Because it's a very complicated deal, involving a player who has the right to veto the trade and other parts, it is still unlikely to happen. But the negotiations will go on.
It's not finished yet :-\
I swear if it falls through and we don't get Manny after this jinx post, I'll kill you. -
9:05pm: Gammons: talks will continue into Thursday. Good, it'll give me something to do.
8:50pm: Will Carroll believes the Commissioner's Office has been informed of a Red Sox-Pirates-Marlins trade even though the teams haven't agreed on the prospects. Here's how he sees it:
Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirezs remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow -
Seems like all they'd have left to talk about if it is close is who the propsects are, hopefully it goes through, actually seems pretty good for all 3 teams.
-
Miami might be the perfect place for Manny Ramirez.
-
Why? Bay is having a much better season.

I don't mind the trade too much because we would actually get a decent young player in return for Bay, and hopefully some legit prospects. We aren't going to be a winner this year or next, time to build for the future. Again. -
dats wacist ?
-
not really, i'm serious. i had factored in that he'll probably encounter more people that speak his native language down there, but it's more just that i think the culture in Florida will be more compatible with his personality. it feel like it's a good fit. i say this having spent a lot of time both hanging out in Miami and watching Manny play baseball. also Manny will have fewer opportunities to embarrass the shit out of Mike Mussina.
-
and this is why you are and never will be a MLB GM, Hermida isn't even on the same level as Jason Bay and will never be either. Bay is a all-star OF, Hermida is a avg to decent starter..
-
"and this is why you are and never will be a MLB GM"
I don't even understand this comment.
I'd be willing to bet that Hermida makes more allstar games in Pittsburgh then Bay will for the Red Sox. Theres also a 20% chance that Bay won't be able to handle the media pressure in Boston. If Boston trades Manny they won't make the playoffs. -
The deal for the major players involved appears to be in place. Apparently, what's holding up the deal is what the Pirates are getting in return as far as prospects. Manny has agreed to go to Florida. It's also possible that the Sox and Marlins could work out a deal for Manny without involving the Pirates if an agreement for prospects cannot be reached.
Here's the latest coming from Pittsburgh's end: http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/
I'm all for trading Bay if good talent comes in return. The Pirates, if they are going into full rebuilding, need to get a better deal for Bay/Grabow than they did for Nady/Marte. The Red Sox at least and possibly the Marlins as well, I think, become the favorites in their divisions if this works out. -
Aaaaaaand per mlbtraderumors.com....
11:49am: Rosenthal has a mixed opinion, with one source advising caution and another saying the deal is "taking off." Manny is following the ordeal on ESPN.
11:46am: Peter Gammons says the three-way Manny deal is close to dead. It may not make sense for Boston.
As a Sox fan, it'd be tough to see Manny go but can Theo really afford to let this fall apart? Pick up a similar (at this point in their respective careers, check the numbers), younger, controlled, and likely more motivated player in Bay along with a LH reliever or risk Manny half-assing it all season and causing headaches in the clubhouse and the city of Boston? Easy choice IMO. As long as the prospect demands aren't overly ridiculous out of Pittsburgh (who would already be picking up a player who has the potential to exceed Bay's capabilities in the future and is already a solid player now in Hermida), I think we all see Jason Bay on a plane to Boston and Manny to Miami come ~4PM EST. -
Well I hope for everyone's sake, the deal works out as well. It makes no sense for the Pirates to keep Bay because he, along with Grabow are likely gone after 2009 anyway. The Pirates have very little talent in the upper levels of the minors and need to rebuild and stock up as much as possible.
-
I also expect the Marlins to make some sort of deal by the deadline for Texas C Laird. Texas is swamped in catching prospects (Salty and Max Ramirez are both MLB ready) and Fla needs a C. There were rumors leading up to the deadline saying that there were small talks going on ... so stayed tuned into that also

Update: Apparently now, the Pirates are happy with the prospects, it seems to be Florida holding up the deal because they want more money to cover Ramirez's salary. That from Peter Gammons.
Seperately, as far as Bay, the Blue Jays appear to be making a possible late charge for him.
Edit: Looks like it is dead now. -
BYE BYE MANNY!
Manny to Dodgers...Bay to Boston. -
ESPN Radio just said that Manny has been moved, but can't confirm it yet? Is the LA deal it?
-
ya so far all they know is manny to LA and Bay to Boston, may be more in the deal too.
Good riddance imo. His talent is hall of fame worthy, but his attitude is Busch League softball worthy
edit:
manny, moss, craig hanson AND remainder of manny's contract ($7mill) all for Jason Bay. wow. manny really pissed some people off in the last week for them to overpay like this...
