I believe that, if you were to somehow measure the patriotism of all Americans, the mean (or median, take your pick!) military number would be significantly higher than the national mean (or median). Hope that's nuanced enough for your superior intellect.

Edited By: Magnet Steve Jul 27th, 2012 at 08:54 PMIt's also beyond pathetic to judge people based on who they were at 17. Lots of idiots with no future go into the military because it is "their only option", and come out the other side as upstanding, contributing citizens. It's really hard to quantify exactly how much 13 years of schooling fucks with some people's heads, but get them out of school and into some serious shit and they flourish.Originally Posted by Jaybone2315

But it's much easier to compare yourself to those idiots with no future and pat yourself on the back because you were so much smarter (as LarsonLarsen did). -
I mean I can see how my initial comment can be misconstrued, but I still don't think it's wrong. I really don't think the majority of currently enlisted service-people joined up because they're so much more patriotic than you or me.
For the record, my brother is currently stationed in Alaska(not exactly sure where) I think just National Guard. Haven't spoke to him in a couple years.
My grandfather on my mothers side is retired and served in Vietnam. His brother was one of only 6 people from my hometown killed in action during Vietnam.
Grandfather on my fathers side is retired Navy. Fought in Okinawa etc etc.
So I'm not ignorant to military tradition/honor/whatever. I'm just not naive enough to think that the military members of the more modern era all joined out of a sense of patriotic duty. -

That's fantastic if they come out as better people in the end. Doesn't mean they joined because they are just "more patriotic" than the rest of us.
Would you also agree that it's equally, if not more pathetic to judge someone off a couple of message board posts? At least I judged guys who I'd known for 10+ years before making broad, general statements about them. -

I have friends who went in who admit to saying they have no other options. Its not like im randomly judging people and looking down on them. Some of those friends are now more success then a lot of people I graduated with. But when they went it... yea, they didnt have anything else going for them. -
He's trying to talk down to me, Grindier. Not you.
-
lol, more successful than I could have possibly imagined.

jay's position is two things bc he adds in that he has also seen those who have gone after college. they are both saying that the ones who go in from HS and dont go to college are basically the "idiots". Jay def echoes Larson's statement, he just adds on to it.
-
I'll admit that calling them "idiots" or inferring that they joined out of stupidity was a poor choice of words.
But Jay said in a better way exactly what I meant. People who thought they had no other choice/thought they couldn't get a good enough job/get into school/whatever. -
Weird. I thought I opened the thread about the batman movie killings.

Thank you. This shit "rustles my jimmies" because over 6000 young men and women have died in the fucking desert, thousands of miles from home, many in agonizing pain, wearing our colors and our flags. That's over 6000 families whose lives have been completely torn apart: parents, widows, children losing parents they may have never even met. Many, if not most, of them didn't even believe in the war they were fighting, but they went anyway.

Kinda scary since the theater I was going to is in MD. Wonder if it was on his hitlist
*edit*jesus h christWhen police arrived at Prescott's house on Thursday to speak to him, he was wearing a t-shirt with the writing, "Guns don't kill people, I do."

Who said anything about people joining up because they were more patriotic? It happens from time to time (WW2, 9/11, etc.), but that doesn't make it the norm. I haven't served, but I presume that the military environment is one that fosters patriotism, purpose and unity.

please explain, I don't understand wtf this means nor how it applies to what I said.
and lol @ the other responses to my response, ya'll have a really strong grasp of the military and how it works if you think americans won't kill other americans when ordered to do so.
pm the civil war.
and the Indian Wars where good american soldiers had no problem slaughtering women and children and old men by the thousands.
and throw in the fire-bombing of dresden (and tokyo, etc.) for another example of our military killing tens of thousands of women and children. the point of this last example is when the killing is so far removed from face to face it's a lot easier to ignore the cognitive dissonance and keep doing your job when you don't actually see the results (and/or choose to ignore them). this was to address the naysayers that think the gov't couldn't succeed in subduing a popular uprising of folks armed with hand-guns and rifles and rocks and spears. they can use these more remote methods to quell an uprising without having ground troops aiming at people that are their neighbors. although that didn't stop many in the civil war. -
The majority of the personnel in our armed forces have all joined since 9/11 and the current wars that we have since been in.. Personally, i dont care if you have absolutely nothing going for you, there is a high level of patriotism in my opinion to join an organization where you are putting your life on the line for what your nation asks of you. Also, why is it looked at like people dont have better options if they choose the military out of high school? Some just can't afford college, don't want to live at home and want to do something of value.. Bottom line, joining the military has its benefits of course, but its also a tremendous and sometimes fatal sacrifice and I wouldnt diminish it in any way by categorizing it as a fallback for some on any level.

With that being said, I am not trying to illustrate that you are automatically more patriotric than others just by joining the military, but you are definitely patriotric. You can be patriotic in many ways by volunteering, giving to others less fortunate, being a teacher, fireman, policeman, or basically just being a positive product to society. Anything to help out your fellow American and make us stronger vice weaker. I respect that just as much as a someone who logs many years in the service as we are all needed somewhere. -
Stop invading countries then.
