Wasn't hard to see that coming, as he's been, without question, the best player in the NFL over the course of the past four weeks. NFL OROY, ESPN's "Next" athlete, this award and others only further validate that he's on his way to becoming perhaps the greatest football player in history.

Matt Ryan NFC Offensive Player of Month
By Pat Yasinskas
It already has been a busy day for awards in the NFC South with Atlanta's Matt Bryant winning the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award and New Orleans' Malcolm Jenkins winning the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award.
Now, it gets even bigger. Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for November. In that time frame, Ryan led the Falcons to a 4-0 record. Atlanta also has a streak going in which it has set a new franchise record by going four consecutive games without a turnover.
In November, Ryan completed 106 of 153 passes (69.3 percent) for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns with a 102.3 passer rating. Ryan also led the Falcons on game-winning drives in the final minute of play in games against Baltimore and Green Bay.

Well deserved, has been a pleasant surprise over last 3 years
-
Matty fucking Ice.
I was (and still am) a huge Michael Vick fan. I root against the Eagles, but for Vick while watching him this year. I was devastated when he went to jail and everything. With that said no way in hell would I trade Ryan for Vick. Vick is more exciting to watch and everything but noway would I have the same faith in him as I do Ryan if we need a game tying/winning drive with under two minutes. Ryan succeeds every time in those situations. He completes nearly 70% of his passes and hasn't turned the ball over in over a month.
Its a good feeling knowing your team doesn't have to worry about the QB position for another 15 years or so. -
Ok Ok I get it.

Edited By: dallasttu Dec 1st, 2010 at 11:01 PMI feel the exact same way; I've always been a huge Vick fan and couldn't be less surprised seeing him playing like he is---just had to put it together. He has a skill set that has never been seen before and probably won't be again for a really long time. With that said, there isn't a QB in the league that I'd trade Ryan for. I read an article a few months ago (need to find it---Sporting News maybe?) that said if every roster in the league were purged and there was a draft starting from scratch with every NFL player available, that he'd be the #1 pick (age obv working against Manning and Brady). Aside from Brady, there isn't another QB in the league I'd rather see leading the Falcons down the field at the end of the 4th quarter---and unlike my OP, there's no hyperbole intended here.Originally Posted by kevdog410

I'm flattered; perhaps it's my ability to please everyone with each and every post? Who knows, but either way, I know I'll be sleeping better tonight. -
He is a totally different QB now than he was when played for the Falcons by his own admission if you are not surprised you are in the front of a very short line
-
Am I wrong? I don't think its too premature at all to put him in the same category as the Brady's and Mannings after he has done it long enough. But we just have to wait until he does it long enough- not a question of IF he can but WHEN HE DOES. Many EXPERTS compared him to Manning coming out of college and Ryan hasn't done anything to prove them wrong yet. He has a good (enough) arm, very accurate, makes good decisions, and is very clutch. He has also done it on a consistent basis to prove its no fluke.
So yes, barring catastrophic injury the Falcons have their QB for the next 15 years or so. -
he's good, but a little over exaggeration on best player in nfl history, and/or next 15 years.
I like Matty Ice tho. But lets be real here for a second...
Brady, Manning, Rogers, Rivers. -
He's not doing anything now he didn't do then---he's just doing the good things a lot more often and is much more consistent. He was the best football player on the field then and he is now---just takes his craft seriously now, which is great to see. I wish him the best (as long as he's not playing the Falcons, obv)

He was the best athlete on the field (prolly still is) not even close to the best football player............ever
and he is doing A LOT now he didnt do then as in completing passes checking down staying in the pocket much longer he is not as much fun to watch but he is winning games with more than his legs like a QB should
still not the best football player on the field -
Compare Ryans first three years to any other QB in history and get back to me. Oh yea, and what makes you think he is all of a sudden going to turn into shit and not continue playing well? What are some examples of QBs that have been as good as Ryan this early and then tanked afterwards.
In other words, if Ryan isn't as good as manning or brady in several years, he will be the first example. So I guess its a mathematical possibility but highly unlikely. Don't act like he is a dime a dozen. -
Admittedly I'm a homer and have been probably exaggerating a bit with Matty Ice but c'mon- there is nothing on the football field that he can't do that other QB's can (beside the scrambling ability of Vick). He can make all the throws and is given an incredible amount of leeway running the offense. Its amazing how often Atlanta goes to the no-huddle and relies on Ryan to call the plays and audible out of them if need be. He looks like a 10 year vet out there and not a third year young QB. He has the physical tools and the intellect to accomplish as much, if not more, than any other QB.
Now just needs to go out there and do it. -
My best friend is a huge falcon fan and all this talk from him and all these people ITT makes vomit. Please GTFO talking about the Falcons winning the superbowl and all this Matty Ice this and Matty ice that. Matt Ryan is a good QB, a top 10 QB this year, but he's only great at home, struggles on the road esp in late Nov./Dec. in inclement weather, has a good arm, is very accurate in the 10-25yd pass range but is very conservative and panics in the pocket if u can bring pressure on him, esp up the middle. He's johnny quick to just chuck the ball out of bounds if his first or 2nd option is covered. People in this city are going nuts thinking superbowl but this season is just a combo of Ryan playing better than he did last year where he played pretty avg most of the year, being freakishly injury free throughout the whole season, leading the league in turnover differential this year(studies have shown that this is mostly the result of good timing and being lucky during the duration of the season---think variance in tournaments and running good when recovering fumbles and the like), and playing the SOFTEST schedule of any of the playoff contending teams due to the NFC West being the worst division ever fielded in the history of the NFL and the AFC south being a 2 team division.
Ryan success is still predicated on the play action pass and the run game and if u are a great run defense and can stop the run like Pittsburgh Ryan struggles to put up points, esp. on the road. (Atlanta managed just 2 measly FG's and Ryan threw an interception on the last drive in regulation, pitt missed a GW field goal at end of reg. Atlanta gets ball first in OT, Ryan again leads team nowhere and pitt wins game on a 50 yd run---so much for matty ice). The falcons have a very suspect secondary and even with their weak schedule they could very well be 7-4 if New Orleans kicker doesn't miss a chip shot 29 yd Fg in OT and San Fran's Nate Clements protects the ball and just goes down after intercepting a late pass from Ryan instead of allowing White to chase him from behind and force a fumble with San Fran leading 14-13 and a minute and some change left. Not to mention the other last minute comebacks and the non-pass interference call against baltimore.
This year the Falcons have faced these QB's ranked in descending order. Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Josh Freeman, and Sam Bradford(last only cause he's a rookie). Those are the quality starting QB's. they've also faced Dennis Dixon, Derek Anderson, Alex Smith, Seneca Wallace/Jake Delhomme but these QB's are so horrid it does no good to compare. Drew Brees had 345 yds passing to 228 yds for Ryan. Aaron Rodgers had 344 yds to Ryans 197. Ryan did outplay Flacco with 316 yds to Flacco's 215. Carson Palmer had 412 yds to Ryans 299. Kevin Kolb had 326 to Ryan 250. Ryan had 235 yds to Josh Freemans 189. Ryan had 253 yds to Sam Bradford's 233.
So while Matt Ryan can outplay his young QB counterparts Flacco, Freeman, and Bradford he's clearly not at an elite QB level and all this talk of being the greatest ever and being in Manning and Brady's and Bree's level is bullshit as he's not even the best player on his team as you can argue that Turner and White are better players and the team and Ryan goes as Turner goes. Let's not even mention the horrible 1st playoff game Ryan played in Arizona. He couldn't even carve up a horrible Arizona defense in that game and in Arizona's 2 year playoff run with Warner they faced Matt Ryan, Jake Delhomme, Donovan McNabb, Ben Roethlisburger, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. Wow guess which two QB's had mediocre/bad games against Arizona's defense. Ryan and Delhomme. All the other QB's(who are elite btw) torched Arizona's defense with Rodgers having an all time game against them and Brees and Big Ben all had 300+ yds. At this point his career isn't even better than his draft peer/rival Flacco and if Ryan and the Falcons get a home playoff game and they lose all Matt Ryan will be is the next Tony Romo. And they better hope they don't have to face the Eagles, Giants, Bears, Packers or Saints in that first matchup as i feel they will lose that game. Matt Ryan is 1-4 against the NFC East(the falcons are actually 1-5 during that time period but Ryan missed the Philly game last year due to injury).
So please lets just quiet all this Falcons best team in football and Ryan is such a great, wonderful QB and that when its all said and done Joe Montana won't even be able to hold Ryans Jockstrap. Just be happy that your franchise has recovered from the whole Vick fiasco and looks like they have a solid winning foundation for years to come. But let's be serious. My best friend is a die hard falcon fan and he popped a bottle of champaign when the falcons beat buffalo last year to go 9-7 and have back-2-back winning seasons for the 1st time in franchise history. LOL. This is what your working with so just be happy to take baby steps and enjoy that you'll make the playoffs this year and stand a good chance to win the division this year. Talk to me when Ryan wins a BIG game like the NFC championship game or wins the superbowl. -
People who break out all this well compare his first three years to any QB ever thing need to think how ridiculously slanted the rules have been geared towards QBs, WRs and the passing game in the last decade. Shit it's completely different than it was even five years ago so lets chill on that. Obv stats should be better for the younger QBs now since it's such a passing league now.
-
Make that 3 winning seasons in a row
-
Granted, but quarterbacks today are also facing vastly more sophisticated defenses and much, much better athletes.
