We are off the coast of the Philippines conducting relief operations for Typhoon Frank. Below is an article from the Asian Journal.
Most of the folks who have gone ashore say this is the most rewarding thing they have done in their career. The people seem to love us and the government seems to loath us. Go figure.

GI Joes to the Rescue T
he Eagles have come and once again they are in a heroic stance reminiscent of the time when Gen. McArthur charged through risky waters and docked in the Visayas to lend a helping hand and save Filipinos from the disaster they have been through. Aboard a ship again, this time in the form of USS Ronald Reagan, over 6, 000 officers voyaged from Hong Kong toward the Visayas to assist in relief operation in areas devastated by Typhoon "Frank" and assist as well on the retrieval operations of the M/V Princess of the stars.
The turn of events was as swift as their rescue. While on a meeting with US President George Bush on June 24, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo personally asked for assistance and aid for the onslaught of the typhoon on the country. Bush was quick to extend a helping hand, saying in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer that, "We want to help our friends in a time of need."
That Pres. Arroyo has opted to push through with her state visit in the US rather than go back to her countrymen in need has been questioned by many. Yet, we must note the good outcome—that somehow she still found a way to help us. Yes, she may have left us behind but she sent bigger and better aid.
As soon as the storm subsided, USS Reagan was on its way and on June 26, it was already on Philippine shores. It took them two days to get to the country, lest of what our local government could do. In the Western Visayas, in Iloilo—considered as the area most badly hit by the typhoon—the US Navy Seahawks helicopters from the USS Reagan carried potable drinking water and other relief goods to ravaged communities that up to now have no access to water and electricity because of the typhoon. Local officials, who were earlier enraged by the inaction of the National Disaster Coordinating Council four days after the storm, were happy to assist the American troops in the distribution.
But not everyone is happy to welcome the arrival of the USS Reagan. Several senators have questioned the entry of the nuclear-powered ship saying that is violating the laws of the country in disallowing entry of nuclear weapons. They are even demanding that its entry should be first justified as a rescue mission. Is history repeating itself in a different plot in the entry of troops? Are we in danger? Or have Filipinos become too paranoid every time they see white men in their lands? Point of the matter is, rather than question and make other issues out of these developments, it would be much better to just be grateful that another country has lent a helping hand.
If and ever there was an underlying intent in this, we can save it for later. Yes, we always need to be on guard, but in this time of despair and disaster, giving these "saviors" the benefit of the doubt is somehow essential at the moment. At this point, there is a need to become more open for help. We must remover the lines that divide us and exhibit unity in this time of need. Maybe, only then can we restore our faith amidst the tragedy. (AJPress)
