  1. From this article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090512/...s_pope_mideast

At <SPAN class=yshortcuts id=lw_1242158824_13>Monday's Yad Vashem ceremony</SPAN>, the pope spoke of the "horrific tragedy of the Shoah," the Hebrew term for the Holocaust, but disappointed some Jewish leaders who had looked for an apology, as a German and a Catholic, for the genocide.

Why the heck should the pope have to apoligize for an act which he did not commit? I understand this issue is a bit deeper in reality, but I just dont get it.

  3. This part of the article may have something to do with it:

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – The Vatican had to play down <span id="lw_1242158824_0">Pope Benedict</span>'s teenage membership of the <span id="lw_1242158824_1">Hitler Youth</span> on Tuesday as Israeli disappointment at a lack of emotion in his remarks on the <span id="lw_1242158824_2">Holocaust</span> dogged his tour of the Holy Land.

  7. Reread that article. I think it makes it awfully clear, why they might not of been satisfied with the Pope's remarks.

Edit: Not saying he is a Jew Hater but sure sounds like he was somewhat/someway involved during the Holocaust.

Ya, but thats not what i'm referring to at all. Its simply the fact that the powers that be demand an apology from the Pope, its like asking every German who's ever lived during/after the holocaust to apologize. I just dont get it.

no they are asking for someone who was a member of the Hitler Youth for an apology. a bit diff

O FFS the hitler youth had no choice in such matters - it was like being drafted for the most part. Yes there was recruitment, but you can hardly stick any blame on a retarded 10 yr old.

  12. Maybe and I see how you might of thought that but that is not the interpretation I got from the piece. Look at the following quote:

"He came and told us as if he were a historian, someone looking in from the sidelines, about things that should not have happened. And what can you do? He was a part of them," Reuben Rivlin, the speaker of Israel's parliament, told Israel Radio.

From that and the article taken as a whole, I believe their issue is that, he was not just a bystander but actually an participant during the Holocaust.
  13. This brings back memories of high school when 1 of my friends blurted out in the middle of class that the next pope would be the anti-Christ. Almost got expelled, Catholic school.
  14. I'm not saying i agree with the apology bc its silly and he likely had no part, but I'm willing to assume that is why.
  15. Again i'm not passing judgment on him but I doubt he was 10 years old when "He later served in anti-aircraft and infantry units and ended <span id="lw_1242158824_16">World War Two</span> a prisoner of U.S. forces".

  17. apologize for what? "Sorry I was in the hitler youth...with everyone else"? "Sorry I joined/was forced to join (I dunno) the army of my country and fought in a war?"

they should be more pissed with him crying about the "oppressed palestinians" than for not apologizing for something he didn't do
  18. i'd like an apology now ncj.
  19. lol. sure! well, depends. for what?
  20. I think it has more to do with the Catholic Church's neutrality during the Holocaust than the Pope being German or being a member of Hitler Youth.

The Pope during WWII refused to speak out against what the Germans were doing, even Jews came to him asking for help many times. If the Catholic church had taken a more aggressive stance, it may have affected American policy to do something about what was going on.
