  1. Obviously it's gonna come out to be <50% of a stake, but apparently the Wilpons have sold a minority interest in the team to David Einhorn--the hedge fund manager and the guy who finished 18th in the 2006 WSOP ME.

  8. in before Einhorn is indicted by the DOJ for something that the Mets should have caught
  9. There's a pretty decent chance that Einhorn becomes the majority owner in 3 years even if Wilpon wins the Picard lawsuit:
“Einhorn has agreed in principal to purchase roughly 33 percent of the team for $200 million, which will infuse cash and keep the organization solvent in the immediate future. In three years, according to the source, Einhorn has an option to up his stake to 60 percent, although principal owner Fred Wilpon and his family have an opportunity to block Einhorn from gaining that majority stake.

The source said the Wilpons can stop Einhorn from gaining the majority share essentially by returning Einhorn’s initial $200 million investment yet allowing him to keep the 33 percent share of the team.”

If the Mets keep losing money at the rapid pace they have been, it would likely be illogical for Wilpon to want to write Einhorn a $200 million check to maintain control of the team. Then again, "logical" and "Wilpon" don't generally go in the same sentence.

  11. I went to hear him speak when I went to Cornell. He was talking about the financial crisis, he basically gave me my whole perspective on the issue. Also talked to him about poker, apparently he loves the game. All in all, one of the most intelligent people I've met.
