  1. http://www.allheadlinenews.com/artic...+in+attendance

This is a little continuation from the Sounders (who you can thank for the average) pulling 68k fans a couple weeks ago.

I know it's hard to kick a man (NBA) when he is down but fuck that league for cancelling games..

MLS is actually top 10 in the world now so as much as soccers haters complain, the league is gaining tremendous popularity.
  2. Don't see how it is comparable. Basketball stadiums don't hold more than about 20,000 people
  3. It was only a matter of time.

Yep. Same goes for NHL arenas.
  4. are ya'll saying NHL/NBA games would pull more fans if the arenas were larger? why don't they build larger arenas then?

and I think most MSL teams play in soccer-only stadia that hold like 18K-ish but I am not sure.

edit - livestrong sporting park (metro KC) holds 18,467.

No definitely not. Both sports have entirely to many games for their attendance to be that much higher with bigger stadiums imo.

I know Seattle plays at CenturyLink Field (formerly Qwest Field, same stadium as the Seahawks). I'm not sure about other teams though.

and a much larger gate (gross ticket dollars).

It's comparable because they are major sports?

Theres probably only 5 teams in MLS that don't play in soccer venues..

And take the sounders as the best example since they play in a "football stadium". They tarp off the entire upper bowl (except for one time) for soccer games.

It's not like more than 3-4 NBA teams sell out regularly anyway.

  9. NFL & MLB are #1 & #2 respectively and their stadiums hold more than NBA/NHL. What's your point?

Also, found this pretty sweet video of Sounders FC supporters.

  10. I really want the NBA to fail so badly. I used to be a huge fan too.
  11. Just imagine the attendence baseball (or basketball, hockey, etc...) would have if they paid their players 200K per year and only charged $10 per ticket?

  12. Wait doesnt the nba have 3x more games a year? This doesnt ssound correct.

cheapest seat in the house for the Sounders is $28, $30 for Galaxy. Single game ticket prices that is.
  14. Basketball is played on a tiny court compared to a soccer field. The game is more upclose and specific, you just can't appreciate it from that far away. I'm a big fan wouldn't want to watch a basketball game from the 400th row. That's my theory on why the arenas are smaller anyways.

I still don't know how MLB is at #2. Every sportscenter highlight you see, you can literally count how many people are in the stands. I know a couple teams do well but literally 80% of the league can't ever fill half their stadium.

lol at even insinuating that soccer is more popular than the NBA here. The NBA produces celebrities. Huge corporations offer huge players huge contracts just for exposure. David Beckham coming over here at the end of his career for a billion dollars doesn't count. The last popular soccer athlete was F level celebrity Carlos Valderrama.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad soccer is growing, I find it infinitely more enjoyable to watch than say MLB or NHL but let's not get ahead of ourselves here, it still has a long way to go. They need stars...

Oh you mean like Tampa? ridiculously low payroll....seats are like 12 bucks....and they couldn't even sell out games IN THE WORLD SERIES. No one cares about baseball outside of a few cities where it's cool to wear their apparel.

edit: okay that's nitpicking, I agree with your main point tho.

What's the average MLS ticket price though. We are talking about the whole league, right?

So? Again, are we talking about one team or the whole league?

  16. I'll never understand how people enjoy baseball.

Generally.the same people who call soccer boring when they have no problem watching baseball players stand around for 4hours...

It's just ignorance, nothing wrong with it, it's expected. Same thing happens in MMA. New fans always boo like morons when the fight goes to the ground, but once they watch for a while and learn what's actually going on, they realize it can be exciting too. Same with soccer, the more I watch, the more familiar I get, the more I enjoy it. I hate to say it but this same effect would probably happen if I watched baseball too.

I don't fing soccer boring, I find it infuriating. It would be one of my favorite sports to watch if not for diving, ties, shootouts, faking injuries and injury time. Baseball is the only major sport without a time limit. I find baseball exciting in the same way that I find poker exciting. Long stretches of apparently not much happening and then a big pot won or lost. A lot more happens in those long stretches than the casual fan realizes though.

  22. Yet the MLS is massively more irrelevant than the NBA.

Despite the fact that I really like soccer and grew up playing and coaching it, I find it pretty boring to watch. Aside from world cup and uefa cup and shit i rarely watch...mls is unwatchable.

Baseball is way more boring to me but prob stems from the fact that i never played it or followed it so all strategy and shit is over my head.

good thing about soccer imo is continuous clock with no commercials.

  24. Big whoop. the nba is averaging 0 fans. Hey-ohhhhhhhhhhh!

This. Basketball and soccer are boring as shit. NBA playoffs is different but outside of the occasional 1st round NBA game (GS v Dallas), the first round is usually garbage as well.

I would say there is at least as much, if not more, diving in the NBA. The rules favor flopping. It's infuriating watching an athletic 7'0" center fall over like a goddamn tree when he gets run into by a 6'0" PG.

But that 7 footer then gets up after trying to draw the foul instead of lying on the court and waiting for a stretcher to carry him off, only to come back in to the game a minute later.
  30. 2011 MLS attendance 5.4 million
    2010-11 NBA attendance 21.3 million
