It’s been awhile so I thought I would contribute a movie review, and I think I found a movie that Skeeze hasn’t reviewed yet.

South of France, is the setting and Suzanne (Kristin Scott Thomas) is living an upper class, well-to-do lifestyle with her husband, a doctor. She has returned to work as a physical therapist, but seems to be caught in a rather boring lifestyle, that is, until Ivan (Sergi Lopez), the Catalan speaking Spanish man shows up to perform some repairs in her and the doctor’s home. A torrid love affair begins, which places Suzanne in a financial prison when she decides to leave her husband and pursue Ivan. In the meantime the husband freezes all of the assets trying to get her to return home.
This movie is interesting as Suzanne’s character seems to have many faces: doting wife and mother until she decides to leave her husband, a little crazy when she finds love with Ivan, criminal and a few other elements to boot. It’s easy to sympathize with certain situations she finds herself in, while viewing her as somewhat cold-hearted in other situations. These feelings seem to change throughout the movie.
One thing that struck me with this movie, is that a few friends have told me that the French think we (Americans) are somewhat contradictory and hypocritical because we allow gun ownership while warning people against smoking. This family had a gun, a rifle to be exact, so I’m not sure if this was for hunting and something you see outside of the city or something you may see in more upper class settings in France, or if I’ve just been misinformed.
Overall, this was a decent movie. 3 out of 5 star ranking. Worth watching, but it wouldn’t be at the top of my watch list, which is unusual when compared to some of the other French films I’ve watched.

Thanks for posting. I know there is at least a small crowd in OT who like to check out foreign films. I had heard of this but never really had it on my radar. I really need to start expanding my foreign film knowledge so hopefully I'll see it at some point.

How about a 4/5 or 5/5 French movie recommendation? I have seen 0 French movies and I know some French so I probably have more interest than most but no clue where to start.

It's hard to recommend French film due to 1.) my limited sample size 2.) not sure which period you like or if you have a preference 3.) you're a guy presumably lolOriginally Posted by skeeze666

The safe recommendation is "Amelie" followed by "Diva." I also liked the "Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1023441/) but it's not like a 4 or 5 star film and definitely not gonna be for everyone.
Skeeze, yeah, I usually watch films off the beaten path then add in a few blockbuster films, so I know the audience will be small. This is a good way for me to write and start putting thoughts to paper. -
me too, Alch!
