Just plug a vga monitor into it, and then hit the function-monitor button (something like function+F5) until you get an output on your laptop plus the vga monitor.
Then right click on your desktop and goto properites, and finish setting it up from there.

Lol someone please answer the man. I bought two flat screen dell monitors when I got my dell 9300 laptop, and one is sitting here idle because I have been too lazy to figure it all out. Do I need a splitter that connects to my laptop port that allows two monitors to be plugged into one port? (if that doesn't make sense, it's because I can handle any software/program, but not the harware issues.)

Since a lot of laptops dont have two, what do you do?

not sure about the 8600, but the 9300 has a vga and a dvi video connector. i think most desktop video cards with dual monitor capabilities have vga and dvi ports, so you should be able to get a dvi/vga adapter.
if you don't have two ports, i'd assume your are sol.
