1. I was recently appointed to the editorial board of the newspaper I work for. I am not a journalist, I am the Circulation Director. Anyway, first editorial I took a shot at was published. It follows:

Community needs to know police are working for us.

With yet another senseless death of a teenager in Carlsbad, the question of the CPDs openness with the public is fresh once more. Without some form of communication from the Police Department, wild rumors begin to form where the public gathers to talk about such things.

Therein lies the rub, as Horatio Caine from CSI: Miami would say.

These rumors, if the only source of information, have the potential to taint a jury pool if a case is brought forth in this or any investigation. Updates, even when there is nothing exciting to share, can help to dissolve these rumors. No one wants an investigation impaired or compromised but would like to know that the Police Department is keeping them in the loop.

The community isnt asking for an episode of CSI: Carlsbad with an exciting theme song by The Who. They are simply asking to be kept apprised of what is going on in their neighborhoods. These same people will someday sit in judgment of a case assembled by Carlsbads finest. To have someone color their decision from the rumors heard in absence of any law enforcement updates would be a crime in and of itself.

Be forthcoming. After all, To Protect and Serve applies to all of us.

  13. you're telling me. papers in Chicago are making layoffs left and right. I covered a women's college basketball game at DePaul a few weeks ago and there was a guy from rivals.com there.

I asked if they had any openings and he said they're always looking for stringers. I asked how much do they pay. His response was "oh, I do this for free".

How can I compete with that.

  15. Thanks for the good words from everyone. Suffice it to say, the CPD wasnt too happy this morning.

Dolphin, when you were looking for work and offered a reward for tips. I think I told you stringing was an option and tech writing. Any luck with that?
