My golf thread for golf fans

    So I've never had any coaching, just go out and play sometimes. Now that I just play poker i get to play golf most days. Shot a 89 over the weekend (first time under 90) and want to get it down to low 80's be end of the summer (our summer just starting).

    But anyway, they had the New Zealand Golf Open over the weekend. The best golfer EVER from NZ is Sir Bob Charles, now 71 years old.

    Sir Bob Charles:
    - Won NZ Open in 1954 as 18 yr old Amateur
    - Has 66 professional tour wins incluidng 6 PGA tour wins and 23 senior pga tour wins
    - First left hander to win a major, winning british open in 1963. Remained only lefty to win major until Mike Weir in 2003.
    - Also has three 2nds and two 3rds in other Majors.
    - Won world matchplay championship in 1969.

    Anyway, this NZ Open is the 100th, he gets an exemption as the only golfer who played in the 50th still capable of doing OK. So he rocks out there with his old school style putter, similar to his 1960's one, and everyone hopes the short driving Charles doesn't embarrass himself on the long 6600 metre course. Not only does Sir Bob make the cut (believe to be the oldest golfer in the World to make a cut at a pro event) but he finishes the event 4 under par for a top 20 spot and the highest NZ finish as well I think. Rated as one of the best putters in the world in his day, his old school putter only makes 24 putts in his final round of 2 under par.

    In his 4 rounds of gold, he beat his age twice and equaled his age once.

    That's how i want to roll when I'm 71. wp, sir bob, wp.

    great post and well said, mathclub. (Over here we're still pretty pumped about Nicklaus at the Masters in '86)

    On the other hand, I'm a pretty big sports guy, and I"m gutted to know that I would get CARVED by a 71 year old at any sport, lol.
