  1. Hey Guys

I just opened my laptop this morning and after the HP start up logo, I got the following error.

"SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Drive 4: ST9120822AS-(S3)
WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

    Press F1 to continue"

Unforntunately pressing F1 does nothing. My computer is frozen on this screen (I am on my PC right now.) Any advice? Am I screwed? Is there anyway to bypass this error screen and get my computer running to back my files up?

    Thanks for any advice

  2. This is good news bad news. Good news is your labtop is fine but your harddrive has failed.

You will not have to replace your machine just the harddrive. If it is under warranty place a service call and they will reload to factory spec, but all your data will be gone.

If it is out of warranty you are going to have to decide weather it is worth it to fix it or not. You can get a new HD < $125. You will have to get a copy of your OS and boot from the CD to reload.

If the labtop is 3+ years, well it is time for a new one.

    Good luck
  3. Thanks, the laptop is about 10 months old, so I am assuming it's worth replacing. I bought it direct from HP, so it may have a 1 year hardware warranty.

    Thanks again

  4. when mine did something similar, might have been the same message, HP sent the wrong hard drive replacement. Then after i sent it back the sent me another hard drive, also the wrong one. Turns out they didnt have the hard drive i needed (comp was like 7 months old, not sure how that even worked) but they had to give me a new computer.

Took like 2 months +, but they ended up giving me a better computer so it was worth the wait I guess.
