PHILADELPHIA Phillies pitchers Brett Myers(notes) and Cole Hamels(notes) had a short but tense confrontation in the teams clubhouse following Game 5 of the World Series, according to one witness, words that stemmed from Hamels recent statement that he was eager for his season to end.
As Myers walked past Hamels near Hamels locker he said, mocking, What are you doing here? I thought you quit.
More From Tim Brown- Yankees show fight at the finish Nov 2, 2009
- Lee offered to pitch on short rest Nov 1, 2009
Hamels, the witness said, responded with an expletive.
Before the situation escalated, Myers was guided away by a team official.
In an otherwise happy Phillies clubhouse they beat the Yankees, 8-6, on Monday night to force Game 6 Myers poked at a sore topic for Hamels. The 25-year-old left-hander has had a difficult regular season, then in four postseason starts has a 7.58 ERA. When the Yankees beat him in Game 3, an unhappy Hamels said of the season, I cant wait for it to end. Its been mentally draining. At year end, you just cant wait for a fresh start.
His quote did not sit well with some teammates, apparently, and even manager Charlie Manuel was perplexed by it.
I was surprised when I heard that, Manuel said. I was surprised at that. But I dont really understand exactly how he meant that.
Hamels is said to be disturbed by the reaction to what he believed to be an innocuous comment. In the same interview, he repeatedly said he hoped to pitch Game 7 if the series goes that far.
Myers might want the ball as well, although he is only an option out of the bullpen because he is on the mend from shoulder soreness that caused him to miss three weeks in September. The right-hander has been mostly a starter in his eight seasons and pitched credibly through the 2008 playoffs, but he pitched only 70 2/3 innings in 2009. Myers recovered quickly from hip surgery in June but the shoulder issue set him back and he has made only two relief appearances in the playoffs.
Myers, who had 21 saves in 2007, was thought to be an option in the late innings for the struggling Brad Lidge if he was 100 percent. But Manuel went with Ryan Madson(notes) in the ninth inning of Game 5. -
thankfully brett has stopped taking all his anger out on his wife.
-
fwiw im glad brett called him out...some1 had to do it, doesnt suprise me that it was myers
-
Myers comment is even worse than the Hamels quote...go beat your wife again
it was a shitty quote by Hamels but overblown imo -
makes you wonder how much heart and focus hes really been putting into his recent starts as well, where hes been pretty bad to say the least
-
LOL people defending Myers here. Myers takes a shot at a guy who you may likely need to lean on in Game 7 of the World Series? GFY Myers...Why is Myers even on the World Series roster when its obv they dont wanna use him??
-
youd think if you were facing elimination in the WS you would want the season to continue?
Even if he didnt say it, if he felt it that is terrible and he is clearly putting himself ahead of the team by feeling this way imo -
Well if you've been watching Hamels at all, maybe someone needed to light a fire under him b/c he has been god awful... Obv better if Chase said it but it's out there now
-
because whether hamels mis-quoted or not, he said he wanted the season to be over, if ur his teammate in the world series and u hear this what would u think...id be pretty damn pissed...team. its a team, not just about cole.

Now is not the time to be pushing Hamels away like he isnt apart of the team. You're likely relying on him if you get to Game 7 and wanna say that shit?? -
I guess you didn't notice Hamels on the bench tonight looking like someone shot his dog. Something is wrong with him and I'm beginning to wonder if he's about to have a Zack Greinke meltdown.

meh maybe...i guess hamels does kinda seem like a vagina, so it probably wouldn't work for him.

but, for some guys, this would get them even more ready to shove ass in game 7. -
Thats the whole point, they need him and hes mentally already bailed on them. If youre gonna bail on us now when we will need you most, then gtfo, youre not part of the team
-
Yes, people realize this but it doesn't mean you verbalize it. That's all I'm saying.

I disagree. For someone who seems to be mentally weak right now, you might just push him over the edge of mental oblivion and you are throwing your chances away. Nice metaphor. But you just have to trust in the guy and give him POSITIVE encouragement. For example, if he has to start game 7, players should be like "Cole was our horse last year in the playoffs and we believe in him". Not "he is a bitching out an us and he better get his shit together".
-
but why would you want such a mentally unstable guy taking the mound for you in game 7 anyway?? better to break him before he takes the mound and hand Happ the ball.

it really depends, if the whole locker room was pissed about it, they can all rally around it and just not start the guy who wanted them to lose.

They should just start Happ in game 7 on a very short leash. Then throw Lee/Chan Ho/Durbin all a few innings. Pitch the game like you would an allstar game.
