I am referring to when the player goes up in the air and instead of dunking it he throws it into the hoop overhand as hard as he can from 3 feet away.
Two dunks specifically come to mind:
a) The Dwight Howard slam dunk contest when he flat out messed up and just threw it in and got standing ovation and 10s from judges I think.
b) Blake Griffin this year that the talking heads consider one of the best dunks of the year. What inspired this thread was I was just watching a dunk countdown for this year on ESPN and #1 was this dunk.
To me a dunk means hand on iron and these bullshit dunks are just overhand layups
I say no dunk. -

A slam dunk is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands over the rim
Key word is 'above' Hand does not have to touch rim, as long as hands are above rim and moving downward -
I wouldn't call them dunks. I'll go along with overhand power layup.

Agrii. Someone posted a video here a few weeks ago that was something like "100 best dunks of the season" and I watched it thinking, "half of those aren't dunks".
-
I would argue that it's more of a dunk if the ball leaves your hand going downward and your hand never touches iron. The tips of your fingers have to be at damn near 12' to do that.
-
It just doesnt feel like a legit dunk to me. What makes it worse is I think a lot of the time they are intending to get rim and for whatever reason don't get there.
-
def dunks
-
This might be true in some cases, but even in those cases, it doesn't make them dunks.

I'd like to get darkpoker12's opinion on this - he is an athlete, you know. -
I've always felt like it's a stretch to call that a dunk.
-
Not a dunk.

To me, the Blake dunk is more legit than the Howard dunk because he was kind of impeded in his progress when his balls went down Timofay's throat.

the 2 pt baskets when they throw it down through the hoop is def a dunk and more impressive than regular dunks
