So, my dad and I were watching my Alma Mater Oklahoma State play in the first round NIT game vs Harvard yesterday and he asked me an interesting question. We went to the final four my senior year in '04, and I loved every minute of the glory days of winning both the Big-12 regular season and tournament and pretty much hate that we aren't in the top 10 anymore, hell top 25 even.
The team played the best overall game of the year, and whupped those Ivy league scrubs. They claimed they should have made the tournament even with Princeton's buzzer beater. Reports are saying Travis Ford has a special way of making his team get up for the NIT (He took his UMASS team to the NIT finals the year before hired @ OSU) when other teams kind of just give up because they didn't make the field of 68.
I mean really, we had a very disappointing season for Stillwater standards, but my dad asked me if I would rather just go the NCAA tournament and not win a game or win the NIT? I assume most people would go the the NCAA tournament. But I think I would rather go to the NIT and win in it as it would do more for the program with the Madison Square national exposure opposed to just playing a game in the field of 68. What would you rather have your team do? Play one game in the NCAA tournament, or win the NIT??? It seems to have gotten North Carolina back to the top this year with the help of last years NIT run to the finals, so...GO Pokes, cut down the NIT nets! -
I think I've read this question every March since I learned how to read.

My answer is NCAA. And I don't have to think hard about it. -
Ummmm... I think UNC's freshmen class got them back to the top this year, not really anything to do with their NIT performance last year.
-
As a UNC fan I'd be 100% happy if they never played an NIT game again
-
lol yeah fuck the NIT man. But if your there, might as well win it!
-
NCAA or bust.

NCAA Tourney
NIT = Not Invited Tournament -
if the question is would i rather have my team go to the ncaa tournament AND NOT have any chance of winning, and we were in fact guaranteed to lose 100%. or win the nit 100% then i go for the win the nit
does some good for the actual program to get that extra practice and tv exposure recruiting wise. and to get the feel of winning a tourney like that would be great experience heading into the tourney the next year hopefully as a step forward
also another note... only 2 teams in the country finish their season with a win... the ncaa champ, and the nit champ -
winning the NIT is like getting "most improved player" award when you were younger... yea, its an award, but not really...
if you made the NCAA tourney, that means you either won your conference tournament, or had a incredible season... ill take that over winning some meaningless tourney anyday... and the excitement of even playing in the greatest tournament in the world in front of millions of viewers, as opposed to playing in front of your friends and parents... -
i stopped reading after "NIT"
-
except the NIT is broadcast on ESPN in front of millions of people. the thing is what if you are a bubble team and you have to play in the play in game, but you will 100% lose, why would you want that instead of getting a 1 seed in the NIT and shipping.

Would you rather min cash or bust out early and play a freeroll. Both suck. NIT/freerolls swallow.
-
as a nebraska fan I would be happy if we dropped the program immediately.
-
pretty sure that minimum amount of people watch the NIT.... pretty much alumni and people just trying to get their fix before the real tourney starts...

and i dont consider playing a playin game as part of the big dance
i guess it all comes down to if you are ok with being a big fish in a little pond, or a little fish in a big pond... personally, i woudl rather play in the big dance... -
There are certain situations like at the bubble of a satellite
