Here's the skinny.
On the 17th I took the family wagon to an oil change place for regular service, on the 24th, the family wagon's coolant and oil level lights come on, I park the car, steam shooting out of the side where the coolant reservoir is located and hustle the family off to bed, it was xmas eve and we were tired. I go down the next morning to find the engine dry as a bone, no oil, and the antifreeze had cooked off and exploded everywhere. I am having it towed to have a 3rd party look and see if the jokers at the oil change place are in fact liable.
Whats the play? -
Yes, they are liable. Prob didn't put the new filter or oil plug in properly.
-
I would assume their liable only if you can prove it. So whoever is looking at the car better document in properly, since you're probably gonna be looking at a new engine.
-
hope u saved your receipt
-
it doesn't matter. you cannot prove that they forgot to do it.
I have had a few friends have this happen and they could not do shit about it.
that is why they say you should check the levels before you leave the place.
they forgot to put an air filter in my jeep... I drove it for about 4k miles like that... got great gas mileage though! -
FYI this happened to my dad's ex wife. She got the whole thing paid for by the oil change place. The filter was installed wrong.
-
If you turned your engine off right away when the trouble lights came on it's probably okay.
-
Doubt you drove it a week without any oil in it. Just because the oil light is on and there's no oil on the dipstick doesn't mean there is no oil in the car. Anyway, the low oil light would've come on the first time you started it.
It sounds like your car might have overheated due to a leak or possibly a stuck thermostat.
Wait for the garage to tell you what's wrong and get their opinion on your situation.
Sucks that happened, especially on Christmas. -
The oil light would come on when pressure is under 5. The o-ring on some cars is a "crush" ring that the oil pan bolt screws into. If th crush ring wasn't replaced by a new one the oil pressure when the car is on would spit oil out of the oil pan when you were driving and when the cars off it may only drip a little. Driving low on oil will wear parts in the engine very fast..very low tolerance in engine parts..ex pistons and rings, crank ect.
