By Chris Low

The NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved three changes for college football, and the one that's sure to garner the most debate is the taunting rule.

Beginning in 2011, if a player is penalized for taunting an opponent on his way to a touchdown that play will be nullified. Currently, that would be a deal-ball foul and assessed on the ensuing kickoff.

But the new rule will make it a live-ball foul, meaning if a player holds the ball out in a taunting manner as he's crossing the goal line, does some type of somersault heading into the end zone or high steps his way into the end zone, the touchdown will be called back and the penalty will be assessed from the spot of the foul.

I can already hear the outcry when the first one's called back in the SEC.

Critics of this rule say it's too subjective. For instance, do you throw the flag if the player is pumping his first wildly to the crowd as he nears the goal line and an opposing player just happens to be nearby?

Get ready for some serious debate, and I don't want to be anywhere near the stadium the day a game-winning touchdown is taken away in the final minutes because a taunting flag was thrown.

Better yet, I don't want to be anywhere near the official that threw the flag.

One thing to remember is that excessive celebration penalties won't fall into this category. So if a player is called for dancing in the end zone with teammates, that by rule is still a dead-ball foul and will be assessed on the ensuing kickoff.

Even that one has come under fire, though. Just ask A.J. Green and the Georgia fans.

3. Football has the dumbest rules ever and this one takes the cake
4. I agree, this is putting the game of FOOTBALL into the OFFICIALS HANDS too much. It's another case of taking the fun out of everything and not letting the players play.

Unfuckingreal. I am pretty sure I will be done w/ college football.

The officials have way too much effect on outcomes of games as it is, this will even make it worse. What about having fun? It's all a part of the game, my god this isn't the pee wee football league, these are grown ass adults playing the game, if they can't handle some taunting, then gtfo
5. I saw this on espn.

NCAA is such a joke.

So we're going to let the worst officials in sports take points off the scoreboard?

Well, who are we kidding. The NCAA let's officials give forearm shivers to players running into the endzone.
6. Starting this season you also can't write messages on your eye black strips. Who in the fuck cares? Maybe instead of worrying about kids expressing themselves and what their eye black says you could find a way to have a real playoff system. Greedy fucks.
7. unfuckingreal.

8. So this is a discressionary call on the part of the official? What a joke!! I am not a fan of dancing and taking off your helmet, but holding the ball out or high-stepping?? WTF, man?!?
9. BOooooooooooooooooooooooooo
10. NCAA rules are absurd. I'm not even a fan of the U, but after watching that ESPN 30 for 30 I miss the old days with dancing, back flips, running into the stands. Now that's some fun.
11. someone please explain the rule where you cant right msgs. on your eye paint?

this has to be the dumbest shit ever! and the taunting rule, holy fuck the NCAA college officials are really really getting their pants to big now.

Although i shouldnt be surprised, the big government is controlling more and so is the big boys of the NCAA. ho hum

13. How many taunting penalties have you seen called? I watch a lot of college football and I can't really remember anyone taunting on the way to the endzone. The only thing I can remember is someone doing a flip into the endzone and I don't even think they called a taunting penalty, I think they just called it unsportsmen like conduct. But I guarantee no one will be doing flips into the endzone anymore.

So basically I am saying you all are getting you panties in a bunch over nothing when you really just want to bitch about there not being a playoff in college football. Which there should be because the BCS is fucking retarded.
14. 1 more reason to fucking hate college football
15. The rule makes sense to me. You're committing the penalty prior to the touchdown being scored, while the play is still occurring, within the field of play. It makes sense that the penalty be from the spot of the foul, so I'm fine with this rule. I doubt it will have much of an impact at all. Players taunting on their way to the end zone are morons.

This is college football man. 18-22 year old kids playing an emotional game will display some kind of emotion during a big play. This rule is total fucking bullshit, and I really hope it's a joke. Do they want the players to be robots out there? What happens when one of the teammates (away from the ball but on the field) starts celebrating a big play that is still going on by throwing his hands in the air? Is that a penalty too?

This rule has to be overturned.
17. Yeah this honestly has got to be a level. Worst rule ever!!! ^^^ I agree with this, kids will do stupid stuff in the heat of the moment. IF this rule is for real then i guarantee there will be several games decided by judgement calls a ref has to make on Player Celebrations. Have we already forgot about the Georgia vs LSU game??? Wow, im really blown away by this...

18. Or everyone could stop being such jackasses and take it like a real man's sport, score a touchdown , hand the ball to the referee, and go celebrate with your teammates on the sideline. I hate all this jive shit
