I wonder if you would have said the same about Bonds after he only hit .223 in his first season, .223/.330/.416, as a 21yr.

  4. Sandy Alderson joined Twitter today (@MetsGM). This was his 1st tweet:

"Getting ready for Spring Training-Driving to FL but haven’t left yet. Big fundraiser tonight for gas money. Also exploring PAC contribution."

So apparently the Mets GM is a huge internet troll. That just makes too much sense.

(And yes, the Mets front office has verified that it is actually Sandy)

  5. Did you see my post in the not threadworthy thread about the payroll? It's absurd (not just the amount of money but the breakdown.)

  9. Has anyone else seen Baseball IQ on the MLB network? I know more about baseball than anyone I know personally and I would get my ass handed to me on this show.
  10. Royals & Alex Gordon agree to 1 year deal. 4.775 million plus 25k bonus possible.

I'm guessing they'll get a long-term deal done prior to the season starting
  12. A's sign Yoenis Cespedes, 4yr $36MM.

    Shocked the A's spent money.

  13. Was there just crazy amounts of over hyping or did something happen to cespedes? I kept hearing rumors about huge money and all these big market teams. Now he ends up in Oakland? Did I miss something?

No nothing happened, Oakland signing him is a surprise but as far as the terms of the deal it is kinda huge money. He was always projected to get around 40 million and the 36 mill he wound up getting is the new record beating Chapmans 30.25.

just bought my season tixs to the 51's and i'm pumped for baseball. looks like this years team is going to have 6 #1s on it plus the cuban ss the jays gave 10mil to. better hit in toronto cause there are plenty of options on the farm. be a dozen scouts at every game and it is always fun talking to those guys. look for the jays to be in the pitching market come july with so much trade bait at AAA.

no, brewr picking on gamma/trout is still amusing. trout needs 600 ab's in 2012, where does he get them? wells gonna ride the pine or do they cut him san fran style? do the angles start trout in salt lake and start him on the big league club in 2013 when hunter is gone?

Bullshit. You don't get a HOF vote just because you're a beat writer, and we all know you weren't a beat writer.

Trout is likely to start the year in the minors because they want to get him regular AB's, and there's no way they're eating Wells' contract at this point. I do think that DiPoto will have a much shorter leash since he has no connection to the Wells deal.

  20. Who is in the A's OF now? They added Cespedes, Josh Reddick, Colin Cowgill (wasn't he supposed to be a good prospect?), and Seth Smith plus they re-signed Crisp. Plus there's no way they're contending within 4 years when Cespedes is a FA and leaves (assuming he even becomes anything). Strange signing.

My thoughts exactly. They go 74-88 last year, lose Cahill, Gio, Bailey, Dejesus, Matsui. Their ace is Bartolo Colon lol. Their not gonna be anywere near as good as Texas or the Angels in the next 4 years. Im not seeing the point of spending 36 mill on this guy. With or without him there not selling any tickets with that AAA lineup.

maybe Beane is hoping he absolutely rakes and is a steal for $36mil, so then he rapes a contender for prospects at trade deadline. Because seriously, does he think he can win the AL West after losing everyone else?

There's actually a pretty good chance they're competitive, because they loaded up their farm system from the trades this offseason. Keith Law had them #9 overall. While I don't think its a forgone conclusion to say they'll be competing for titles, saying 'there's no way they're contending' is pretty ridiculous.

Ridiculous? Have you looked at their team? I think their gonna have to do better than 9th best farm system to be competing in the near future. Theres not a single guy in their lineup that would start on the Rangers or Angels (besides Cespedes).

Unless the Rangers lineup gets gutted and Pujols ages faster than anyone expects, I have my doubts about the A's competing (esp. if their endgame is flipping all their top prospects for more prospects).

Tell me where the Rays were in 2005? Would anyone have put them in the WS 4 years later? 4 years is a long, long time. Weaver and Haren will be 33 and 35 in 4 years. Pujols will be 36 (at the youngest). Who's to say the A's won't have two or three monster drafts and make more international signings? Automatically counting them out four years from now is just stupid.

The rays had the BEST farm system in the league for many years in a row not the 9th best. They had some solid players in 05 on their ML roster as well - Crawford, Huff, Cantu, Lugo, Kazmir. And it was still a real longshot that they made the world series 4 years later. You said there was a pretty good chance the A's will be competitive which to me is way more ridiculous than saying they going to be bad the next 4 years (unless by competitive you mean .500? and not playoff team). How is there a pretty good chance? Baseball prospects are the hardest ones to try and predict having success in the bigs. Theres a pretty good chance the 9th best farm system will have multiple impact prospects come up and be able to help right away? Theyll turn this team from one of the worst in the league to one of the best?

And no nothings automatic in sports, its not impossible for the A's to make the playoffs 4 years from now the point is the odds are stacked way against them and there is certainly not a pretty good chance they'll be competitive.

In 2005, Baseball America had the Rays as having the 9th best farm system. The A's will need a big stroke of luck to have their prospects pan out like the Rays' did, but again, automatically writing them off is just stupid. I think there's a better chance of them being in contention than not.
