  1. Should be a great game tonight between India & Sri Lanka. Two masterful batsmen going head to head.
I know cricket doesn't even blip on the radar to most people here, thats why I thought we could use this thread to ask any questions about the grand gentlemans game of Cricket as well.

My man! Should be a great battle. I also have a soft spot for India. Sachin may well score a ton of tons tonight(that's 100 international scores of 100 or more for the noobs). Also Murily's last ODI(one day internationals). Going to be a special game.

  11. 1st inning completed. Sri Lanka 6/274 after the full 50.
Great batting display however India have raw power and talent when it comes to chasing down a nice total.

  17. It is such a good game guys, I guarantee anyone who likes watching baseball would absolutely be able to get really into a One Day or 20/20 cricket game! (the two game types I have mentioned are the two shorter versions of the game (lasting between 3 hours for a 20/20 and 7hours for a one dayer)). A 'test match' is a game played over 5 days and can (and quite regularly does) end in a draw, I can understand that not being everyones cup of tea! But cricket in the 20/20 format is awesome!

Scoring system, there is a strip down the middle of an oval/circular playing field, this is called the 'pitch', the bowler bowls the ball (trying to hit the 'wickets' three pieces of wood in the ground) or make the batsmen hit the ball in the air and get caught out) and the batter attempts to hit the ball, to the boundary either along the ground (4 runs) or over on the full (6 runs). If they don't hit it to the boundary the batsmen, (one at each end of the pitch) can run one length of the pitch for one run, two for two runs etc.

The fielders' job is to catch the ball if it is hit to them on the full and stop it if it is hit on the ground, only the 'wicketkeeper' wears gloves as a lot of the balls come to him (similar to a catcher in Baseball). If a fielder can hit the wickets while the batsmen are trying to run then they are out, or if the bowler hits the wickets from a bowl, or if the batsmen hits the ball to a fielder and is caught out, also if the batsmen is using his legs to block the wickets he is considered out also. Each team has 11 people that get a turn to bat, once 10 are out (the 11th cant bat by himself) the team is considered 'all out'. However many runs they got (incl boundaries and runs they ran) the other team has to get 1 more than them to win!

Awesome game, any questions ask me:) or most other people in this thread!

    Diagram, Paint ftw

  18. University of Waterloo has a big Paki and Indian population, so they put the game on live on the big screen in the Student Life Center, place was going nuts, felt like a fight was going to break out,

A Tim Hortons is in the same building and I walked by and was like holy shit, they needed to build a wall down the center of the place.

Oh ya in 2007 when Pakistan lost their coach mysteriously turned up dead a week later.

  19. Thanks poumi, nice break down of the rules. Its very hard to explain the rules, its alot easier to watch and learn the simple elegence of the game. Baseball and cricket have several parallels.
It was a good game, India won in a canter in the end of the day by 5 wickets.
Excellent batting from the Indians, good for the game that india won as they are by far the largest(and poorest) cricket nation.

  20. is test cricket just an overdone amount of game in cricket? is it similar to usa sports playing like twice as long? three times as long? where the outcome isnt usually going to be swayed but they just play longer for tradition? (ftr i dont know how long they actually are but if this match dwarfs test cricket. i mean man) watched a fair amount of todays final and have watched some bigger matches in the past as well. and 50 overs seems more than enough for this kinda stage and 20/20 seems pretty strong for regular matches as well.

gg india, too. its kinda sucks cricket isnt played much outside the (old) british empire. i cant imagine americans, dominicans, venezuluans growing up on this sport. just makes it that much more world wide and competitive.
  21. India played well
    was a great match

all through the match i kept wondering, what would it be like to try and hit a Roger Clemens yorker?? Little Sri Lankan dudes get their leg snapped from a Clemens yorker.
  22. Test Cricket is the best form of the game IMO. The swings in test cricket are massive, the momentum changes over the course of a day or session alot more and the outcome is never set in stone. For example if an opening batsmen in a 20/20 or ODI(50 overs) smashes it for a quick century that performance could dictate the game in so much as the opposing team has little chance of chasing the score down if they get off to a sluggish start or lose a few quick wickets.
Compare test cricket to a good long structured poker tournament, 50 over games being a turbo and 20/20 being a super turbo. The skill level is manifested in the long form(tests) of the game more so than a short structured game(20/20). Each wicket in a tests is more valuble than a wicket in a 20/20, also the rythem/tempo of the game changes alot more in tests so statergy comes into the match alot more. Test cricket is the purest form of the game IMO. Tests seem drawn out and long for the uneducated observer , however for someone who knows the game there is nothing more exciting than a close test match.

So when elendil says India won by 5 wickets, they passed Sri Lankas score and only 5 of their batsmen had gotten out. Couldnt agree more with you about test cricket being the pinnacle of the game and I love it but I also can see why people don't like it. I like the poker analogy, NZ is an ok team but they very rarely win test matches because the team that wins a test match has performed well for a full 5 days and NZ just cant seem to manage that!

Roger Clemens (all base ballers) threw the ball, action doesn't compare to bowling in cricket in the least! At the same time if he had been brought up on cricket I'm sure he would have done well as he is a sick athlete and obv has good arm muscles etc. But you throw an MLB pitcher a cricket ball and he gets an absolute hiding, not to mention they can't catch without gloves;)

Disagree with elendil (alot) about India being the poorest of the cricketing nations!!! They run the whole dam show with the mega bucks they bring in, their fans may be the poorest of all fans but the team/organisation is absolutely not poor.
