Since I posted I have gone to the gym 3x in 2 days....twice for racquetball and once I did 45 min elliptical...also been eating grilled chicken and corn and water/gatorade. Going to try and start going 2x a day to gym, before and after work. I want to do cardio in the morning and lift at night, since cardio at night makes it hard for me to sleep. Need your help OT, my goal is 40lbs in the next 20 weeks.
-
that can prob be done with diet alone.cardio and weights are obv a huge +.

id say if its close getting down to the wire, drop the weights for a while since theyll make you gain muscle weight. -
Drop the corn, Clay. As vegetables go, that's not a good one. I'd also suggest a workout schedule you can maintain. Since you make a post like this a couple times per year, it sounds like a lifestyle change is in order. If you go to the gym twice a day for 20 weeks, I think it's pretty safe to say that you will stop when you hit your goal or the final day of the bet. You will have earned it, and will deserve a break from it...and then we'll read about another weight loss bet in February or March next year since you got burnt out and stopped eating right and working out 14x per week.
40 lbs in that amount of time should be extremely easy with only moderate lifestyle change. Working out 3-4x per week and monitoring your intake should make you hit your goal and then some.
If you really want to kickstart it, there is a guy named George DeJohn who has a detox diet that's great for rapid, healthy fat loss. It's not a crash diet or anything stupid, just a three-week plan where you eat fruit, vegetables, meat and some supplements that come in a kit (no processed foods, no nuts and only minimal dairy). If you have any questions about it, PM me. I usually do it once a year to clean out my system. His website is his name followed by dot net. -
I already mentioned it, but honestly Clay, your best bet is complex barbell exercises 3X a week and diet. High impact stuff like Crossfit and excess cardio generally leads to burnout and or injury. Look into Starting Strength.

If you're just looking to win the bet, I would seriously consider going heavy on cardio and good nutrition. The biggest key to your nutrition is to find things that are healthy for you AND that you like. If you're turning to grilled chicken/corn/brown rice/etc. and don't care for that shit, your chances at long term success are going to be slim. Find stuff that works for you. Find veggies that you like and eat the hell out of them. For me, I really enjoy eating chicken, tuna and eggs. I incorporated this into my diet and ate a lot of those things. I also would do 40-60 minutes of intense cardio per day (roughly 6 times a week) with a little weightlifting mixed in as well. I think for the sheer purpose of losing weight, cardio is your best bet. I started increasing my weightlifting regimen after I dropped about 40 pounds or so.Originally Posted by LVpokerdealer

I'd also recommend checking out www.myfitnesspal.com and using that religiously to keep track of your caloric intake. It has a very extensive database and definitely kept me accountable for what I ate. One last thing....treat yourself every now and then. If you try to go 100% hardcore and deny yourself things that you crave, I guarantee that you'll end up falling off the wagon. My two weak spots are ice cream and Mexican food and I haven't given up either. Instead of eating ice cream now, I eat one of those Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches (140 calories) and it completely satisfies my desire for ice cream. With Mexican food, I tend to get tacos w/ grilled meat and that does the same job for me. It's all about finding healthier alternatives to your weak spots.
If you want any help or just need some moral support, PM me. I've done this pretty much by myself, but I know that having somebody to keep you accountable helps a lot. You can do this, brotha. -
Squats are twice a week?
-
They are 3X a week on SS. If you start to plateau you can drop them back to 2 x a week of you like. You could conceivably get to where the workload is so much your body needs almost an entire week to recover, but that is fairly rare. The main reason most people skimp on squats is because squats are a mans lift.

Need a little advice/help. I am 37 and weigh 184 and am 6 feet tall. I am running 5 miles a day at 9 minute a mile pace and lifting weights. I am burning off at least 500 calories a workout and maybe a little more. I just got my gym membership and plan on doing 6 days a week. I want to get rid of my belly and make my body all muscle. How many calories do you think I should eat a day?

Do you know your bodyfat %?

there a good fats and bad fats. if you want to avoid most of the bad fats, eat real food for starters. whole grains, lean meats yadda yadda. monounsaturated fats are considered good fats, because theyre usable by the body unlike the crap fats that just get stored as fat, or at least thats partly how i understand it. nuts and olive oil are 2 things that have monounsaturated fats.

sugar is a problem for people because it gets converted to fat, so don't eat sugar. of course get lots of protein, and don't worry about carbs as much as some people swear by. atkins or low carb diets are just stupid. also coffee and other caffene can both be bad for belly fat if anyones having trouble with their stomach -
I'd say you need roughly 2200 calories per day. Running is overrated when it comes to getting cut. If you follow a solid diet and training regimen cardio isn't needed to be honest, but the other benefits you get from cardio are obviously worth it. Hit your macros and total calorie goals and you will see results.

135 on strict OHP today for reps. Felt good to finally get plates in the air.

if you guys want to get in shape and get strong, join your local rock climbing gym. all you really need to climb is a harness ($50-100), atc device + locking beaner ($30-40) and shoes ($50-250) and a partner. i got into it to advance my mountaineering skillset, but i really cant think of anything else that is better exercise.

haven't read every page of thread, but has anyone ever tried a Spinning class? holy shit. Did it for an hour and it was brutal. I'm sure it gets easier if you go on the reg, but a hell of a workout.
-
i didn't like riding bikes as a kid and just watching spinning class wears me out..no chance i'd try it...but props to you for doing it..depending on the instructor it can be super intense.
damn back is acting up again so no squats or deadlifts for a few more weeks..probably gonna have to drop squats altogether and just do leg press because with my show in may i can't afford another two months off trying to recover.
strength keeps climbing though and my weight does gradually as well...weighed in at 206 this morning. I was at 208 but got lazy on my diet for a few weeks and dropped a couple pounds, but it's been on point and i'm progressing nicely. -
keep at it asstaggs.
I'm 5 days away from tough mudder, and in no shape to do it.
sigh -
"Bad fats" would be non-natural trans fats - avoid those.

All other fats including mono-unsaturated, poly-unsaturated and yes even saturated fats are needed and are good for your body.
Also - sugar and "bad fats" don't get stored as fat. ANY excess calories gets stored as fat. If you ate only vegetables but ate so many that you exceeded your calorie maintenance level for the day - those excess vegetables would be stored as fat. On the flipside you can eat all fast food and do so at the proper calorie and macronutrient levels and be ripped beyond ripped, although your overall health would take a hit from the lack of nutrients. -
Nice work. 21 pounds in 3 months is a great rate of loss. Keep at it and don't be shocked if weight loss stalls that's natural. Keep at it and adjust your diet and exercise as needed to break through plateaus.

Hey OT. I was wondering anyones thoughts on 1MR (one more rep)
I'm leaning towards giving it a shot to give my workout that extra kick. Thoughts?
Also for anyone still liberally going to the gym try almond milk spinach shakes. FO REAL. -
Is is a preworkout supp? Never heard of it.

In general everyone will react different to that stuff. Personally I don't like any preworkout other than maybe coffee but I like working out on an empty stomach and others can't do that. -
happy weekend, ot workout crew.

Thought I'd share this quote i stumbled across from reddit fitness, pretty good stuff:
If things went all medieval and you had to fight a fit guy like me over your girl, I'd ravage your ass and take her. You okay with that?
When your girl is out with her friends, she's checkin' me out because I've worked to improve my appearance and it shows. You okay with that?
You think you're safe out here in this world? You think it's okay to be this unfit, lazy little monger? You know you're not safe in your job, I'm sure. Every day you go above and beyond to make sure that the cutthroat guillotine of labor supply doesn't mutilate you into an unrecognizable, unemployed piece of shit. Why do you think it's different with your fitness?
How'd you get to where you are? People look at you and laugh. People use you as a benchmark to change their own habits. You okay with that?
Let's get it poppin', kid. No relapses. It's kill or be killed out here: it always has been. Sure, we changed the rules a little and added our own little trifling sense of justice and morality. But nothing's really changed.
Don't be one of these assholes making pathetic reoccurring attempts to change their lifestyle. Don't whine about it. You've got self-discipline and nothing else in this life. You've got one try: to fail once is to fail every time. In six months, you're either going to be a pathetic, guilt-ridden failure, or a fucking tribute to human will. Your bitch of a mother-in-law will make comments like, "I can't believe it...." Your girl will get nervous about how much you can accomplish just by setting your mind to it and start asking you to tell her she's good enough for you. Assholes who taunted you will have nothing... nothing... to say. You did something they either simply couldn't even begin, or tried to do and failed miserably.
And then when my girl is out with her friends, she'll be checking you out, motherfucker. Let's do this. -
I like it.

Just moved into my new place and a Crossfit is about 2 blocks away. After my 8 or so months of 5X5 and 3X5 I have finally become bored and really need something new. I've been having trouble mentally getting to the gym 3 days a week and with golf, the summer, being so nice outside and my love of beer and good food I've managed to take a few weeks off here and there completely so my gains really stagnated. Also, my cardio is pathetic. I verbally committed to a Spring baseball team so I gotta build my strength back up so I can get back into the mid 80's. -
Finished Tough Mudder in under4 hours, but could have been at least 1 hour faster because one of my teammates was not prepared
Its more fun than hard imo
