In case the rest of you geniuses were wondering, Pinkel was trying to get a hyped up rush from Arizona State to jump offsides so he could have a 43-yard FG attempt instead of a 48-yard attempt.

Most kickers say that "icing" them actually helps them clear their minds and get in a better state for the upcoming kick anyway.
I know Pinkel is a dumbass for the most part (and I'm an Illinois fan), but that wasn't bad at all. You guys act like the timeouts made the kid miss the 48-yarder like it was guaranteed to go in... -

that extra 5 yards easily could have been the difference between a make and a miss...that kick was just wide left.
his kicker's career long was 50 yards, so yes...it makes tons of sense to try to get him 5 free yards in that situation.
like i said...pinkel is a dipshit for the most part, but you can hardly rip on him for trying. and i love how you fail to address how pretty much every kicker says they like it when somebody tries to ice them.
and try to speak english the next time you respond plz. -
he was out of timeouts...otherwise he might have tried it again.

i'm not saying it was the 100% right move, but there were about 20 people in a row who jumped in with the OMFG LOL WTF, when it seemed pretty obvious what he was trying to do. -
You let your stud kicker kick the game winning FG in that spot if he is in within distance. Not try to over coach and ice your kicker when 1/10 times you may get an extra 5 yards.

This didn't even occur to me... welp. #eatingcrow

That kick is good from 43. 1 timeout or 10 timeouts...if the kicker is nervous he is nervous.
I like the play by Pinkel. Offsides equal 5 yards and another play because they get a first down and still have 1 timeout left. -
you do understand that "icing" the kicker is a phenomenon, right? there is no more pressure on the kicker coming out of the timeout than there is when he's lining it up the first time...like i've said THREE times now--every kicker that i've ever heard speak on it says that the timeout helps them; not bug them out.

especially when they used to let guys call timeouts AS the kick was being attempted...it only helps when a guy gets a look at a game-winner obv.
Exactly...and "icing" a guy has never been proven to work anyway. -
jroth, do you really expect a kicker to say that it bothers him when they call timeout though? come on, obv no kicker in their right mind would say it bothers them...
-
Ef me. Could be a long year of watching terrible pass coverage.
-
i dunno...i don't know why they wouldn't tell the truth. it's not like it's going to stop coaches from calling "ice" timeouts in that situation. even if it's been proven to not work.
-
My perspective: Mizzou played like shit and we were lucky to be in a position to win the game. Pinkel's playcalling was suspect as usual. I thought the same as JRoth that he was trying to get them to jump offsides. Again we were just lucky to be that close -- I felt ASU was the better team all night.
-
but its not been proven to not work...it works sometimes, it doesnt sometimes...

fwiw, I dont think calling the TO makes a kicker more nervous but it absolutely has to break their concentration...maybe they were fully focused and cant get as focused as they were, maybe they werent fully focused and calling the TO gives another min or 2 for the kicker to really concentrate...its great and its awful imo... -
Pinkel said post game that ASU had been jumping all night and wanted to get Ressel 5 more yards...there ya go OT.
