PHOENIX -- A 13-year-old Arizona boy died in a freak accident after a baseball hit him over the heart as he tried to bunt, officials in his Little League said Friday.
Hayden Walton went for the bunt during a game Tuesday night in the close-knit northern Arizona city of Winslow, said Jamey Jones, a Winslow Little League official.
"He took an inside pitch right in the chest," Jones said. "After that he took two steps to first base and collapsed."
He died the next morning at a local hospital.
With a soon to be 5 year old in tball, and around here they pitch to them in tball, this is something that has never ever crossed my mind.
13 is obv way too soon, thoughts with this kids family -
Very tragic. Hate hearing about kids dieing like this. Sympathy to the family.
-
that pitcher musta had a cannon of an arm to throw that fast.
-
why was he going to first base?
-
clearly says he tried to bunt the ball but i appreciate your sarcasm
-
heart breaking

shitty story, but really a freak thing.
also, if they pitch to the kids in tee-ball, it isnt really tee-ball. -
I was wondering about that too.

Also, @ NYY, so I guess it just depends on if he was squared or not. I would think that if the kid is pitching that fast/close, I would HOPE he wasn't squared up still, regardless it def sucks either way. -
I thought it was just obvious he pulled the bunt back. I mean it was obv coming at his chest, hes not going to still attempt the bunt, natural reaction is going to be pull it back and attempt to get out of the way

the pitcher is going to carry that around for the rest of his life
-
meh, they give them 3 swings to try and hit the ball if they dont then the tee comes out. Of the 11 kids on the team and the 3 innings they play there might be 10 balls total hit from the mound.

such baseball rules noobage in this thread
bunting is the same as swing, if you make an attempt to hit the ball and get hit by the pitch you dont get first. If you show bunt but do not attempt to bunt it standard hit by pitch rules apply.
Also on a separate rule says you have to make at least some effort to get out of the way of the pitch and you cannot lean into a pitch, a ball (or strike) will be called and the batter continues his at bat -
nasty example- Jordan Schafer takes one off the face trying to bunt- this one hit his bat so obv a strike

wgaf? it's part of the game!
-
can someone be this slow? apparently
-
It might seem like a bad thing for him right now, and I understand him being upset, but really guys, it IS a blessing in disguise. Now he can quit playing childish games, and will see that there are more productive things to do with his life, that will make him happier in the long run.

It just happened, so I can understand people not being ready to accept this, but it is the best thing for everyone involved. -
