  1. Smokerock, seriously, do you realize that post was literally on par with like, if let's say we had been discussing chainsaws, and you come in and are like "Why would anyone want to own a chainsaw. Pocket knives/guns I can see, but why get a chainsaw?" as if you are literally unaware of the actual purpose of a chainsaw (TO CUT WOOD, fucking obviously). It's the same thing with machetes. Yes, you CAN obviously use them for violent purposes, but that isn't what they are actually built for. Just like, you CAN obviously use a chainsaw for violent purposes if you want to, but, again, that isn't at all what they are intended for.

Just like how chainsaws are intended for being a practical tool to cut tree branches off of trees/cut down trees/cut through logs, etc, machetes are intended as a practical tool for cutting through thick tall grass, vines, shrubs, bamboo, bushes, etc when you are out on a narrow trail in dense forresty areas/jungle/thicket, and the path is obstructed by vegetation, if you have a machete, it allows you to just hack your way through it and make your own trail with brute force, allowing you to go where you want, even if it otherwise would've been blocked off to you due to the vegetation in the way.

Obviously in hollywood horror movies, we constantly see chainsaws being used to saw people in half, and machetes being used to hack people's limbs off, but, neither of those two things are the inded use for either of those two tools. You should probably be like, aware of that, and stuff. Lolz.

  2. BF, Ill try and do a "you" post and explain my intentions fully lolz

In canada, we are custom to not seeing any sort of dangerous things at all... (well, except for gay homless drug addicts in toronto), so when you post "how to make your own machete" videos (very cool btw) the first thing that snaps into my brain is "holy shit, thats a crazy ass weapon!"

We never see pistols, automatic weapons, or even knives in day to day lives, so from a cultural aspect, seeing a machete is crazy as fuck.

I wasnt trying to be demeaning or insulting or anyway, I guess I just wanted to hear what your intentions were with a machete lolz

If you are using it for an actual use i.e brush, wood, grass, w/e the typical use is for a knife that big, then thats sweet, but if you were wanting it for some sort of protection reason, then I wanted to hear about that lol thats all
  3. ummmm.....

I believe you about the gun stuff, but, I have a feeling that you are about as WRONG as humanly fuckin possible about there not being shitloads of chainsaws and machetes in canada. Fucking lol @ the idea of chainsaws being a scary foreign/weird object to Canadians. Wtf? If anything, they probably own more chainsaws per person than just about any other country on the planet.

Maybe YOU personally are weird and instantly think of "OMG, the only thing that comes to mind when I see a chainsaw or a machete is VIOLENCE!! AHHHH OMG OMG OMG!!! ::pees pants:: etc" but, I'm pretty sure the rest of the 99% of the Canadian population isn't the way you are, and actually know what a fucking chainsaw is actually for, and what a machete is for, and many of the citizens of your country own at least 1 if not both of those two tools.

Want to try that again, slick? I always have a blade with me, no matter what. I have a multi-tool in the car, and it has a little blade on it. When I was into to making walking sticks, I almost always had a knapsack with me that had a nice little hatchet, as well as a Dozuku saw (it`s Japanese, and kind of a switchblade . . . except it`s 15 inches long). AS for firearms in our day to day lives, I`ll give you that one . . .
  6. Arghhhhh, I get so frustrated with the sheer amount of illogical and/or wrong stuff you write in your posts.

I feel like, we are basically born to hate each other lol. Cuz it's like, you hate long posts, and I write long posts, and then, I hate illogical/wrong posts, and you write illogical/wrong posts, so, we were designed to not get along.

I think we should fight (with machetes and chainsaws obviously, to make it as ironic as possible, lol)

    Just kidding.

But seriously tho, chainsaws and machetes are pretty common items, and most people over the age of 5 comprehend what they are actually made for. Stop being all ridiculous lol

I was making the point of how you asking why anyone would own a machete, and writing your post in a manner where it was blatantly obvious that you were thinking about it strictly in terms of it being some sort of weapon, was about as ridiculous as if you had done the same exact thing, except, in regards to chainsaws.

As in, just like how it would've been retarded if you would've been like "Why would anyone want to own a chainsaw, it seems like a weird self defense weapon, couldn't you just have a pistol instead?", it would be a ridiculous thing to say, since, obviously for 99.999% of people, they have a chainsaw for the purpose of cutting through wood/logs/branches etc, not for killing people. The same is the case with machetes, that 99% of people get them in order to use them to cut through tall thick grass/bushes/vines/etc when they are on a path that is blocked by vegetation when they're out in the wild. They generally aren't buying them with the intention of using it as their self defense weapon. You didn't seem to comprehend this concept, so, I explained it to you. Etc.

  12. I can't decide which thread is dumber, this or the Macaulay culkin one.
  13. I want a machete now.

Also Machete was an allsum movie.

That's the only contribution I can make in this thread. Sorry.
  14. 32" one man crosscut saw ftw
  15. I was on the smokecock bandwagon until I realized he was a Canadian pussy. Oh no a machete!! Jesus Christ...
  16. I own this:

    And this:

I bought the Gerber for its utility as a machete/saw and have found that it a very useful tool in the wilderness. It might not be the most quality-made machete one could own, but it's reasonably priced and very useful.

I'll probably be looking at getting a new machete before too long, but I've got some other camping supplies to buy/upgrade before I get another. When I do, it'll probably be the KABAR Kukri, although I like the Cutlass too.

Reminds me of the joke about the Park Ranger who, when asked why he always sold the Bear spray so"hard" in the park store, replied, "cuz the Bears like a little seasoning on their food." And I do not carry a blade out of anything other than habit.

  18. i'm a tomahawk guy b. they work for just about anything. here is one i did for one of our esteemed members here last year

if he comes back around he might want to post a pic of the finished hawk i sent him.
got two more in the works for current OT'ers. i will do pictures of those as i go along though i won't say who they are for.

    http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/sh...-CS-Trail-Hawk
go to this forum for a good bit of info on hawks. i have one posted in the middle there somewhere.
as for machetes, don't get me started.
  19. Whoa, that looks pretty sick.

I don't really know much about hawks tbh (well, I don't really know much about blades in general for that matter, but, especially not the tomahawks), other than they always have been pretty intriguing with the stroy behind them as far as what the Native Americans were doing with them back in the day, lol.

As for crafting your own blades by the way, I was wondering:

When you buy the steel for a blade, is it possible to buy steel that is already forged? Like, the rectangular slab of metal you buy is already "forged" (whatever that even means, I don't really know, I just know that for high quality blades they are supposed to be "forged" or something).

Or, would that sort of be self-defeating purpose, in that, it needs to be forged during the process of creating the blade edge itself, in order for there to be any advantage to it, so, it would be a waste to get a forged slab of steel and etch the blade out afterwards, in terms of blade quality? Like, you haveto forge it while you are making the blade or something? How does this work? What does forging even mean? I mean, I know with a "cast" metal, it means they just pour the metal into a mold, and it comes out in the shape of whatever the hollow clay mold was that they poured the metal into, and then, that's considered inferior quality compared to forging, since it'll have bubbles and imperfections and not be properly heat treated/hardened or something. But, for forging, I dunno what the actual process is, or how one would do it in relation to creating a high quality blade. I assume it has something to do with hammering the piece of metal while it is red hot and malleable, and also has something to do with heat treating it? Like, dipping it into cold water, and then heating it back up and then dipping it in certain oils, or something like that? I dunno.

Cuz like, I think I could probably figure out how to machine a blade if I had a good work bench and metal cutting saws, and some vises and clamps and a grinder and stuff like the guy with the vids on how he made his home made machetes, but, I figure if I'm gonna home make my own blades, I would want to only do it if I could take it a step further and make the blade actually be legit high quality, like, properly heat treated and "forged" or something like that, so that it would actually be on par with a really good high end expensive sword blade or whatever. I assume this would be a lot more difficult though, but, it would probably be a pretty cool hobby.

Anyway, so yea, if you or anyone can explain about some of that stuff that would be much appreciated tho

  20. very impressive mr. nasty - is that made out of stainless? and how did you get all the fancy engraving on it?
  21. thanks sax! and that was created with acid actually. wrap around flame job. also my first ever hawk. i did not forge it just modded up a cold steel hawk. here is one of it finished. black leather dye soaked haft. this hawk went through a ton of changes and i even broke the spike driving it through some steel (with new owners permission) and had to re shape and grind. the steel is high carbon just polished-a lot.

  22. very impressed my friend - i would not want to be on the wrong end of that bad boy

  26. oh no machetes are a must. i have had high dollar and dime store. if you use it and sharpen in the field then a 10 dolla made in south america blade is for you. easy to use. easy to sharpen and won't break the bank. i have the Gerber gator as well and sent them a scathing letter on what i thought of it. big fan of everything bladed.
