  1. In the few couple weeks I'm taking my PAL (Canadian Possession & Acquisition License) and as pretty much a n00b don't really know what I want to buy after I've passed so I'm asking OT for their recommendations. What I do know is I would like to buy a shotgun, a rifle (mostly for target practice and a bit of hunting)(30-30 / 30.06 / ?)) and a handgun or two (.45 / 9mm / ?).

I've target shot a fair bit in my life so I'm not really a n00b when it comes to shooting just more so as to knowing what I should buy.

So OT...show off your collection and give me your opinions on what I should buy.
  2. I would go .40-.45 over 9mm. HK compact, or HK tactical are my favorites. I don't know a ton about hunting rifles. I have a winchester defender 12 gauge.

  3. I have one of these bad boys.

  4. Hunting rifles? I am a huge fan of Browning, opinions will certainly vary as everyone has their own favorite.

If just target shooting 9mm is the most cost effective. If you are talking protection then nothing less than .40 S/W. If you want a bigger pistol like a 1911 go with Kimber.

As said above HK's are incredibly solid and Sig Sauer's are great shooter's right out of the box as well.
  5. Can you even buy handgun ammo in Canada?
  6. Browning is also good for shotguns as well, although a bit more expensive than most. Remington 870 is the tits for reliability, the 1100 is nice as well.

Listen to HKMP5N on the pistol choice. Get a .40 SW or a Glock 36. If u want a revolver, get the .357 SW.

Rifle depends on what u want to hunt...
  7. I just got this one. Browning Silver. It sure does kill a lot of clay pigeons. I'm in the market for a handgun now.

  8. Get the Ruger Scout Rifle in .308, will be good for hunting and defense if the crazy Americans ever decide to invade your country.
  9. What HK said about the handgun.

What do you plan to hunt with the rifle?
  10. I like HK's and Sig's, I have a Sig 229 same gun the secret service uses so if it's good enough to protect the bowel movement it's good enough for me
  11. Springfield XD-9 Subcompact

    Springfield XDM-9 3.8

Glock 26, the GF carries this.

  12. I was thinking of the XD 40. It seems like a good gun at a reasonable price. Comments?

Like a Glock, good bang for the $$$.
  14. Can felons buy guns?
  15. I don't know much about comparison for handguns, I just buy what I like; it's not like I need to really look at the performance specs for what I use them for. However for hunting rifles, like someone else said, it depends on what you are going to hunt and the area. My two rifles I love the most are my Marlin 336 30-30, and Winchester .270. 30-30 is better for shorter range, since the round drops like a brick past ~150 yards. Accurate with just iron sights. The .270 is just deadly but since it just has a scope and no fixed sights harder to take the quick shot. Either one is great though; there is a reason why these two have remained unchanged for close to 100 years

I shot the XD40 and Glock 27 (subcompact 40) back-to-back on Friday. I really like the XD, but I was more proficient with the Glock. Glock 26 (subcompact 9mm) will be my next handgun. Granted, I prefer the safety features of the XD. Will you be carrying this weapon, or just keeping it bedside drawer and/or glovebox?

Find a range that offers rentals. Some of them will let you try several different models for one rental fee. You will probably only be allowed to use their ammo in their guns, but the ammo price shouldn't be too much more than you would pay elsewhere.
  17. Barrett .50 Cal.

You will kill everything you shoot at least.. FTW!!

  18. This thread scares me almost as much as the kidney stone one. As an innocent canadian from a small town actually owning and carrying a gun is mind bottling to me. I'm sure i'd be different if I dropped from my Ma's va jay jay 1000 miles south but to we are a little different and obv you guys have grown up with it for your whole lives.

I had the XD.40, i sold it after about a year of owning it. I just didn't like the feel of it. A lot more bulky than a glock.

I've been thinking about buying a hammerless .357 snub revolver for carry.
  20. Not my gun, but way fun to shoot. Oh and yes those are my yoga mats under it. LOL

  21. My sister just went to get her gun license the other day.

    Im a little worried lol.

What should I recommend she get?
  22. Just this with GGG push button collapsible iron sights, but over the next couple months I'll be adding a rail and an EOTech and probably buying a SW M&P 340.

I will store it and use it at the range. I just joined a gun club, but I don't know if they rent. I'll ask tho. My daughter's bf has the XD-40 so I've shot it as well, I just don't have a lot to compare it to.

Sounds like I really should shoot a few others, especially the glocks.
  25. Glocks are the way to go. Trigger can't be beat.
  26. Diggs, unless you have the prohibited certification to your PAL, you can forget about handguns. From your post, it sounds like you have the standard, non-prohibited cert.
  27. I have hunting rifles and a shotgun.

Browning Safari BAR .338 WIN MAG -- get the BOSS if you can, it's worth $100 to be able to pull in the grouping when you're sighting it in. Might be kinda expensive for target practice but is big enough for pretty much anything in North America but can still hunt deer with it if you wanted. BARs shoot well, are dependable, and the automatic action takes away a bit of the recoil. Also, cool thing about these rifles is they don't seem to depreciate.

  29. OP, I'm guessing you won't be getting a restricted or prohibited license. If my guess is correct, you are not permitted to own anything other than "ordinary rifles and shotguns". Hardly any of the guns mentioned above fall into this category.
