  1. Ok, been unemployed for awhile..found a part time job at a major retailer..30-35 hrs a week doing orientation tomorrow. the job isnt really in either of my degree fields and part time.

i have an interview next week for a full time job that i really want in my field. the position was brought up bc of my last interview with the company..(3rd time im interviewing w them) I'm the only candidate interviewing due to a great job on previous interviews w them and the relationship w the consulting firm. i wasnt hired previously bc another person had a bit more related experience than me for the other 2 positions.

Anyways obv im gonna start the part time job bc i need $$ but if im offered the full time job thats salaried w benefits do I just quit the part time job? give 1-2 weeks notice? If offered the full time job I want to start right away but I would feel bad to just quit the pt job. Should I even care?

Also I have a 13 day trip over Tgiving planned. If offered the full time job how do I approach this trip time so early? The trip is overseas and already paid for (not by me) Do i ask them if i can start after I return and do the pt job up till the trip? or do i accept the full time job and start now obv telling them about the trip. i dont want to lose that full time job possibly if they wont budge on the trip.

    thanks for any advice
  2. You can give 2 weeks notice if you want to be professional and not burn that bridge, but at the same time, it's a retail job, and it doesn't sound like you'd be looking for more retail work in the future, so I don't think not giving notice will reflect negatively, unless you need a reference from your retail boss.

When the company contacts you about your letter of offer, just tell them you have this trip planned, and would like to start upon your return. They'll understand, and won't care.

  3. When you interview next week, just tell them you need two weeks before you can start, and then you put in your 2 weeks notice at the part time job (NEVER burn bridges).

I wouldn't bring up the trip thing until they offer you the position, but at that time just explain to them your vacation plans.

    Reason: welp Paki nailed it
  4. i like that Glo..2 weeks until start if offered FT job..then turn in 2 weeks to pt job..that would leave me 1 week until the trip, the trip and then i could start..the FT position is a consulting position but salaried so I was worried the trip might hurt that. i wasnt going to mention it until the i got the offer..if it was an hrly consulting position it would be easier i think bc i wouldnt be working so they arent being charged..i would be working for a consulting agency working with a client of theirs (FT job description)

  5. I don't see anything wrong with starting the PT job, then if you get offerred the FT job:
    A. Be honest with the PT job mgmnt- well, fairly honest. Meaning, tell them that you "unexpectedly" got a job offer that you had written off awhile ago. Something along the lines of "it's really more suited to my degree", etc. Basically, that you wouldn't have wasted their time (PT job), had you known you were getting this FT job offer.

    B. With your 18 day trip planned next month, you wouldn't be starting the FT job until Dec, I take it. Would make tons more sense to put your "date avail to start" as Dec 1st(or whenever your vaca ends). Never start a job and pop an impending vaca on your new employer. Get that shit outta the way(the vaca)- preferrably before you even apply, if poss.

    C. In doing so(starting FT in Dec, it affords you the opp. to work a couple wks at the PT, until vaca. Altho, the PT, esp if it's retail, may not wanna bother. It's kinda expensive and doesn't make sense to train someone who is only gonna work for you <1 mos. But by offering, you don't burn any bridges. If FT falls thru, you have PT as backup plan.

Horrible way to start a job. Can't emphasize that enough. You obv know you have a trip planned. Do not do this^^^
  6. good points.. i could start the FT job Nov 29th..do i tell the PT people tomorrow during scheduling/orientation ill be gone in late Nov? they only do 3 week schedules at a time and given that it brings the schedule to a week prior to the trip..

?-if the full time job says we want you to start now not late november do i see what they say about me taking the trip or try to negotiate the start date to late nov due to out of country trip already planned? or just not go on the trip and pay the person for the expenses all ready planned? the FT job would give me enough money to pay them back by time she gets back from the trip..

the main problem is that i have been interviewing for consulting jobs for 4 months..some get back quickly and others take awhile..im guessing this position and circumstances they would want someone to start soon but i dont know that for sure. this trip was booked while i had no committments to jobs..

  7. Scheduling a basically 3 month vaca around the holiday season(esp for the retail job), while trying to secure a job doesn't make any sense to me in the first place. It's not like it's a long weekend, it's > half the month...and when you start a new job, you're last in line for taking vacas. Just seems like a bad idea to be taking a vaca now(moreso for the FT position).

You say you've been unemployed for awhile, so another month shouldn't make a diff. But I'd def be upfront about the vaca, either way. I'm sure they'd rather know now. It's not uncommon for people to give notice, so starting in 1 month would be more reasonable, than starting next week, then work 2 wks, 3 off...
edit: thought vaca was 18 days, same diff. Also, if I'm the FT guy interviewing you, I'd wonder why you a. never mentioned the planned vaca before or B. wonder why you're interviewing for jobs that you can't start for the next 4-5 wks

  8. I didn't book the trip, my sig other did and wants me to go. Paying for everything already. I was going to tell the FT people about the trip. Wasn't going to start then ask off. Either start and not go on trip, or start after. I guess the tough decision will come if they want to start now and not take the trip. It's 12 days from nov 16 to nov 28. Some time is thanksgiving off/ weekends..I'd be gone 6 days from work. I need the work more than the trip, bills to pay etc. Sig other would rather me go on the trip and support us until I started work full time. But passing up this FT job would be dumb. It's shared experiences vs support and pay bills, she's doing that part now but I have my own bills to take care of and catch up on

  9. If you want the permanent career job...want the job. Unless you absolutely have to be on that vacation, the career should have priority. If the career can accommodate the vacation, great. If not, so be it. Tell your potential employer about the vacation, but also let them know that you have no problem canceling it if it interferes with your position. Don't talk about it already being paid for, or who paid for it. It isn't their problem, and it's unprofessional to provide that info.

I wouldn't worry too much about the retail job. Provide notice if you can, but don't let a job fuck up a career. If it is a major retailer, they probably won't provide any information other than your start and end dates of employment if anyone calls for references. Don't burn the bridge if you can avoid it, but don't think yourself too much a scumbag if you have to.
  10. Michlad and el burro are spot on. gl!
  11. Dude, who gives a fuck about the part time job. They aren't willing to invest in you, fuck them.

As far as the vacation... Can you tell them you need extra time before you start the full time job? When I left my last company to move to my new job I took an extra week, telling my new company that my old company requested it, just to fuck around and have a week off. I even told the new job that my.old company wanted 1 months notice and that I talked them down to 3 weeks to make me look good.

Totally worth it. Pretty sure I played video games and masturbated for a week. It was amazing.

  12. I interviewed today and got the job offer for the full time job. Excellent benefits that start immediately, (Havent had health for 5 months) dental, 401k, life insurance, etc. The time off listed is 2 weeks paid vacation, 10 holidays, personal days and sick days. I obviously accepted the offer and my start date is November 7th. I still have to meet with the account manager to finalize everything, do I mention the scheduled trip now and just go ahead and tell the sig other I wont be going?

It wasnt brought up in my interview (start date) until after I had the job offer and I didnt have time on the phone to go into it but wanted to obv accept it right then.

    Thoughts moving forward?

  13. Forget the trip, imo.
  14. i woould just ask to push the start date back. if they dont want to then trip is sol.
  15. my roommate was in the same situation where he got offered a new job and had already had a trip planned before then. when they offered him the job, he told them about the trip, and they had him start right when he got back.
  16. Tell them that your new employer wants you to stick around for an extra two weeks, and ask if you can push the date back because you want to "finish a project" with them. Go on trip, don't tell anyone at the new job about it. Profit.
  17. Update:

Not going on the trip. I can take up to -40 hrs of vacation time but since its important for me to be there and not looked highly on to leave that soon I decided not to go on the trip. Ultimately my debts are high and taking the trip would put me more in debt (paying back SO) and I wouldnt be making money when I need to. I need to get back on my feet financially and although I want to go badly on the trip I can take a trip anytime. After not working for so long and gaining more debt this was the best decision to make to be stable.

    Sigh..

And the part time job was cool as well. I get to work which ever days i want 6-9pm or weekends so I get extra money from that job as well going directly into savings. gotta build it back up since it was all used during my stints in unemployment
